I wasnt going to, but I did

Post by moonhopper »

I have just purchased a 1966 S2a from Auckland, I have all ways wanted a land rover since joining the army 15 years ago. and as a young farm hand driving them around on the farm. So i took the plunge and brought this sight unseen, Rego'd and warranted. 186 motor, Fairy Overdrive,Warn free wheel hubs,

I few bits to tidy and then a re-spray. then I will be ready for Duck shooting

Looks good and it doesn't look like too much work is needed.

That will increase the value of the neighbourhood.

Not many series 2s on the road now

that looks really nice ! hows the chassis ?
original motor ?

the placement of the exhaust looks like a worry, i'd get that straightened out and have it bent downwards on the inside of the leaf.... that will catch on something and get pushed into your tyre by the looks? (pics can be deceiving)

last thing you want is to leave your muffler behind in a mud bog :D

nice truck tho !

The Chassis is in geat condition, I was planning on moving the muffler a bit as I diddnt want the kids to get burnt off it,the motor was chagned to a Holden 186 a few years back as well as changing the front seats, and belts. the good thing is he got it all certified. It will arrive on Tuesday and straight into the shed to spray the underneath and chassis. and then a re-spray. I wont be using it much for serious offroading just going shooting and the odd play run.

yeah getting burnt on it could be another issue.... 186's are great, slap an electronic dizzy on it 25%+ fuel saving, carb kit with tighter jet at least another 15%..
lotsa things u can do to slow down the fuel gauges descent

mines a 202 and it absolutely chews through gas.....

unless your wallet is deep enough that you just dont care :)

what is involved in swithcing to electonic Dizy, Do I just find the required part and bang it in. I havent worked on Holden motors before, mainly zuks which motor would have the electronic dizy as standard.

yeah, if its an old points ignition dizzy it will start to consume gas really rapidly (if it isnt already)...
and will probably foul up plugs....
an electronic dizzy off an efi VK commodore is a slap in replacement, you just need the special coil and leads that come with it, and you may need to bridge a couple of wires, i think the standard dizzys are only 7 volts when it needs to be 12 for elec ignition, so you just bridge the wire from the ignition which has a resistor that makes it 7 volts to the 12v ignition rail, ez pz.......
(or get rid of the resistor?) sometimes people put 12 volt coils on anyway to get better spark so u may not have to do this...
apart from that just chuck a timing light on it and your away...

makes a huge difference, no more cranking for 20 seconds when its cold, fires up first pop every time......(even on really cold mornings) I havent done mine yet but a mate put electronic dizzy in his 202 and it runs so unbelievably well im gonna have to do it........

hows the clutch in it ?

Would it not be 12 volt already to fire up the 186 motor?
as far as I know the clutch is all good, but if needed I will replace it, just as I have with most other trucks i have brought, that is just maintenance.

Nice truck mate. shes a beaut. :)

Ahhh if only I still had mine was good fun I had the 202 and yes they chew through gas like no tomorrow.

With the coil discussion I had someone test drive mine and left the ignition on and all of a sudden there was oil on my driveway open the bonnet and singed my fingers on the coil it was oil cooled by the looks of things and cooked and overflowed as a result it wouldnt start.

Looked in my parts bin and found a coil out of a parts car I had (1992 Nissan Bluebird TRX 2.4) wired it up (doesnt matter witch way) and fired up first pop after that no hesitation at all so would highly recommend something like that if you have any issues.

I'm pretty certain the 186/202 came standard with a 7 volt coil?
It is highly likely that every single one transplanted into a landy was given a 12volt coil, just for more oomph in the spark...

as far as clutch goes, dont you bet on it ! :)
I've had my landy/202 combo 10 years and have towed/pulled and torn shit out of the clutch in various situations that called for it (even a 20 foot container weighing 6,000 pounds . .) and theres nothing wrong with it... I had it all apart recently and it was clean and tidy, and still plenty of meat on the clutch plate....

the reason I ask tho is there are various different types of setups used when connecting a holden motor up to a series gearbox... sometimes the holden flywheel is used, sometimes the landrover flywheel is used... etc etc... i've encounted a few various setups using different kinds of adaptor plates and some have their pitfalls... just curious as to what yours might be :)

minta thats a good score there was one on trademe for a hundy, i thought that was a bit steep, but it did include all the leads besides the coil to dizzy lead (they are special leads, different ends on them)

if your ever after any parts you've got landy heaven at your fingertips in napier so you should be set :)
