91 Safari SWB parts required

Post by SirGerald »

While under the 1991 Nissan Safari SWB on the weekend I noticed a couple of things that just don’t look right and will need replacing and wonder if anyone out there in ORE world has some they want to get rid of nice and cheap.

o Front bump stop is lying sideways in the coil spring. The rubber has completely separated from the mount so require a new one (or suggestions if a better replacement is available)

o Tie Rod (rod from wheel to wheel) as a bend in the middle of it. I’m guessing that this is meant to be nice and straight and will need a new one. Is it worth upgrading to the heavy duty ones on 4wdbits or just replace with 2nd hand one?? It will end up with 35” simex tyres if that changes anything??

o Rear panhard rod has a slight kink in it. Will be ok for a while but will need replacing at some stage

o Lower rear trailing arm is similar to panhard. Only a little bend in it so can stay is for a while unless I find a good replacement.

Feel free to give me a yell

the panhard and trailing arm can be straightened. you can then weld some angle iron to it to give them strength. otherwise you'll be replacing them all the time. the steering tierod can also be straightened, then sleeve it with steam pressure pipe, it won't bend then. i have done all this and there as strong as.

Cheers for the advise. Sounds like worth a try.

As a thought how is the wof man with the angle iron welded to the trailing arms?? No issues??

I have had no issues with the welding of the angle iron in terms of WOf. With the sleeving of the tierod you will have to split the tube for it to go over then reweld it back together. Just don't weld the actual tierod, tricky but doable. If you are in canterbury I have some of the steam tube left over if you want to buy. You have to buy it in a whole lenght and it aint cheap. I'd sell what is left, over 3/4 for $50.
