1kz te hard starting when cold

Post by marklaforges »

Hi I have a 1kz te engine in a 94 surf. I just rebuilt it be cause head cracked. It started running rough when engine was eating coolant, i thought it was doing this because the coolant was dropping combustion temp. Since I have rebuilt the engine it still does this. I have tested all sensors the tps was faulty replaced it same prob, checked compression it was 480 psi across, replaced injection pump still the same, replaced all capacitors in ecu, no fix, replaced nozzles andchecked them on pop tester all crack at 156 bar, no fix, glow plugs are new they cycle fine. Also when engine warms up it Idles fine but if reved up to 1500-3000 rpm it smokes and misses only uner no load, put it in gear even cold while it misses and drive doesn't miss runs great. I tried another ecu yesterday from my friends truck just to make sure no diff put my ecu in his truck his truck would run fine. Put clear fuel hose no air in fuel. I am at my wits end. Any help would be great! THANKS!

ok only thing i could think of for cold start issue would be bent rods causing lower compression? as for that no load miss i spent ages chasing the same thing on mine, it was also acompanyed by a ugly fuel knock. hard to belive but after going through the same nightmare as you in the end what fixed it was removing the big butterfly out of the throttle body, strange but true! try it its easy enough.

yeah long story first i removed egr, then the throttle butterfly. few months later the POS ran a bearing so fully rebuilt it. for some reason i fitted another throttle body i had that still had the butterfly in it. spent the next month chasing the problem an pulling my hair out, then pulled out the butterfly after trying everything else bar pulling the head off it an it fixed it.

well I removed egr and throttle plate and still same hard start when cold. I even tried advancing timing still the same. Now I really don't know I was thinking on replacing crank sensor but when i'm driving never a problem.
