Tarras to Omakau (Over Dunstan Mountains)

Post by wjw »

Trip Time: 2 hrs +

Distance: 30Km's ish

Obstacles: 4 or 5 creek crossings and 26 gates

Note: Tons of livestock so make sure you leave the gates as found, if in doubt close them..

From Wanaka, heading south on Highway 8, turn hard left after the Lindis river bridge, easy to miss this one so slow down before the bridge. Follow the tar seal till you get to a left hand bend, at this point there is a gravel road that goes straight on, follow that. From there it's pretty straight forward, just follow the road markers.

When you get to the other end you'll get to a complicated junction, easiest route is to take RaceCourse Road towards Omakau. Once in Omakau Turn right onto Highway 85 and that will take you to Highway 8 between Alexandra and Clyde.

When we went last weekend we saw 3 farm trucks and 4 other 4wd's so keep an eye out for traffic. Also there were hundreds of sheep so watch for them too.

There are some great views from on top (will have photos up soon).

Enjoy,

Bill

if its been rainning for a couple of days watch the big ford just past the old stone hut it can get rather deep. ie just below the headlights on my rocky. this track is extremely easy but is recommended by me in dry weather most higher sitting cars can make it through this track. but as bill said great veiws. if going off main track by the stone hut permission is needed as is private prop. DOC ends at the gate at the top of the hill. contact hamish paterson, matakanui station. i think he still runs it.

On the way (if you have perrmision) you can turn right at the stone hut , this track will take you up along the Dunston Range to the Leaning Rock, exit down by the Cromwell Gorge. Well worth the trip on a Fine Day.
