Stupid or fine with proper maintenance?

Was out the Waimak the other day playing as ya do ,
Added a few pics of the Cruiser for yas all

Wanting to know , if doing this every other weekend is gonna bugger it over time?

I'd appreciate it if someone could give me a rundown on what maintenance need's doing after river crossings such as this? or deeper

Last saturday afternoon I ended up bogged down in a deep side stream , a substantial part of the Cruiser was underwater , passenger's seat was under , had to feel round for the pedals , Found the winch controls floating in the back Sadly no pics of that , was too paranoid at the time to think of photos

Is this stupid to do? or fine with the proper care?

That much exposure to water will bugger it quickly with out major maintenance. If you have done no waterproofing work then after every trip you will want to check both axle housings, transfer case, gear box, and (less likely but you may as well) the engine for signs of water contamination in the oil, change it if found (sometimes up to 3 times before it is all clear). You will also want to strip the front hubs and repack the wheel bearings etc each time as the seals break down quite easliy. You also have a front mounted winch, this will be turning into a big mess of rust etc inside as Warn units are notoriously shocking for this.
If you are also playing in the mud at the Mak, then you better allow for changing all the brake shoes, brake pads, and wheel bearings front and often rear every 6 mths as the fine silty mud down there is the best cutting paste known to man and it destroys these items very quickly.

The Gearbox/diff's have breathers , I'l find out if they're working properly this afternoon when I take a look at the oils , Will check T-case and Engine oils too

If you want to spend that much time in the water then I suggest running 3-4 psi of air pressure in all the bits.

From my own experances , change the front hubs inner seals every 20,000Kms, if you don't then expect to have wheel bearing problems

all well and good having standard dif. breatehrs though, you want to re-do them if they havent been running into your bonnet or cab. aswl las doing yoru transmission breather. with my truck i jut ran all my dif/transmission breathers into the back of my engine bay, then put on a pressure cap so if i do stall in deep water the caps close off.
Another thing i do after river trips is jsut check in my air filter for traces of water... make sure i really clean radiator so no mud clogs up the vents, also check fuel cap.. getting water into your diesel = lots of money to repair. Can fix that by buying some diesel injector cleaner.
Another tip is to stay away from the waimak as the silt is like sandpaper when it gets into Cv's and breaks ect

If the breather tubes go high ( in cab or engine bay ) leave them open, why, when a warm diff is suddenly cooled off , if causes a vacume in the diff, an open tube then lets the air travel into the diff, if there is a one way valve ( toyota type ) on the tube then water will be sucked in thru the diff seals.

Seems to be the case with the rear diff , drained it yesterday and an ocean of water came with the oil . Now replaced and seems fine

Gonna take your advice and redo the breather's , seems the front's working as it should but the rears not

If you like the Mak cos its close, try the Ashley, its not that far away and proper mud. Plus the up side is there are some tracks that don't look like 350,000 Trucks have been down them.
