jeep sos

Post by fish »

i was driving up the hill out of town this evening when all of a sudden i lost heaps of power and the engine was sounding real rough, pulled over and listened for a while and i sounds as if she is only firing on 5, a there is a click or loud tap coming from the side where the inlet manifold is. also a rich petrol smell in exhaust. i managed to get it home but stalled twice and i dont know if i should run it anymore?
its a 95 xj. 4l
any advice pleeeease.

the only thing I've ever had to do with jeeps is towing them out of mud holes they stupidly tried to follow me through, or when i've spotted them stuck on the beach with an incoming tide

im with getsum though, whip the rocker cover off and tentatively crank it over, you will see rockers NOT moving, or a lack of oil (failed oil pump could cause one or more of the valves to be noisy as hell, rattling like a mad thing)

could be a million things tho, broken valve stem, cracked piston, conrod ..... its a bigass list by your description

but, the rich petrol smell would incline me to think it was a bent/broken valve letting loads of petrol through and not getting compression to fire that cylinder..

I have one of those for years. it's an over-head one too.
In the same kit is a converted spark plug that hooks to a compressor line with an aro fitting to hold the valve closed.
Used to do valve springs in place with Marine V8's, seemed to do more Fords than Chevs
I keep looking for the loose nut behind the wheel, but I can't find it!!

yeah my chevs valves just keep rattling away, i'll leave em alone til it actually stops working eh (probly never :P)

I've used one of those spark plug air compressor hookups before, keep 80~90psi in the cylinder and the valves stay in place.... unless they leak quite alot I suppose, and you wouldnt want to trip over the compressor lead or something by accident or the valve will drop into the cylinder and you will end up taking the head off anyway to get it out haha

Putting the piston at TDC is a good insurance policy

new spark plugs are the best thing to help a jeep...well the fuel economy anyway. that and filters (all gerneral maintainence really.

the other way to hold a valve inplace is to feed some nylon rope through the spark plug hole and turn the piston towards TDC till it gets tight and the rope will hold the valve in place. (rough i know, but it works)
toymota thats stock standard.

You'll probably find that he broke a plug or two removing them. Easy way to cover that up is to say they needed replacing :?
Good result anyway.....just the cost
Cheers,
