Drowned safari and she's pissed with me over it AUTO
Well I did what I always said I would'nt do and abused my shiney tow wagon and now im suffering the consequences. 94 factory turbo TD42t auto LWB high roof. On impulse I decided to join a couple of mates and go on a trip up a river. It wont be very deep youll be right. Didnt believe that at all but couldnt resist. strapped a temporary snorkel on which did its job perfectlyy. Duct tape and silicone will secure anything. we went up one of the local rivers(napier) criss crossing up about 10 km. great fun. really impressed with how well she did for a 3 ton whale. the missus kept saying she had a bad feeling about things and sure enough eventually got stuck in a slightly deeper bit with the current pushing against the drivers door making the water level go even higher on that side. watching the water level rising in side the truck waiting for someone to get a rope on I tryed again and wriggled myself out. I knew the auto ecu would of gotten wet so was expecting proplems. the water level got about half way up the trans tunnel. sure enough she was in LIMP HOME MODE. made it home no worries with a fault code I guess flashing on the Auto/power switch. pulled the ECU from the side wall of pasengers foot wall .removed circut board dried it in the sun sprayed it with wd40 to stop corrosion. put it back in. tested still in limp mode,light still flashing. checked all fuses. one 15 amp blown. 3rd up from the bottom, right hand bank in main fuse box. replaced. test drive still in limp mode but light is no longer flashing on switch. pulled all plugs I can find on trans wiring and dried. may of missed some as steel covers still on bottom of truck.but there was no problem with water under truck prior to inside getting wet so dont think the issue would be from there.No water in gearbox. fluid level perfect. Bought some electric cleaner just in case the wd40 on circuit board had left too much residue on and was upsetting things. when removing the ecu to do this i pulled the carpet back for a look and found another ecu there. ah ha I thought gottcya. stripped cleaned dried assembled. test drove. no change.
Running out of ideas so all suggestions please??? have done a search. and read all 1200 topics in nissan forum.
dont think there is a proplem with tps as auto does try and do things relative to throttle position. Seems to start of in 2nd can pull it back to first ok then change up to 2nd manualy ok but will not change up from there. which Ecu is for the auto???

Has any body completly fried a safari ECU in water. looks fine. Any body in Hawkes bay want to loan me there ecu for a test?

Check back through 1 of Mark's threads when he drowned his auto Safari and had to replace the ecu to get it going again. He knows all about the ecu's and where they are, part numbers etc.

I have a spare one if you want it in ChCh though. It has been under water as well
but was working fine when I pulled it out (manuel conversion).

auto ecu is goldish/steel outter,24-12v inverter has the vents in it on the older 1990ish model

Have decided it has to be the ECU. What one worth if mud hog's one dosnt work out? Any body got a full manual conversion available?

I have 2 auto computers sitting here that I don't need so get yours and tell me what all the numbers on it are and I'll see if what I've got will suit.
If it doesn't then there is another option of converting your auto to manual shift. It is a pretty simple thing to do and you'll only need 4 relays and the ability to follow a wiring diagram.

yes have read the threads of your manual switching of the auto. seriously considered doing it (capable of doing it) but for what I use it for as my road/tow vehicle Im happy for it just to take care of it's self, but will put be putting the switch on the torque converter lock up. only thing it does that bugs me is the instantly going into lock up when it hits overdrive. and not being able too hold over drive when going down gears. where it goes from lock up straight to 3rd. so the torque converter lock up switch should sort that for me.
The 4 switches does appeal as getting full throttle in third with out it kicking down to second would help on them hills.
Bit concerned as to how having it full manual shift would go with other people occasionally driving it???
Be nice if you wanted to post up a simplified wiring diagram and instructions for the full manual switching setup as many would be interested that havnt seen the thread.

I'll stick to my good old landy with a 202, I think the average toaster would have more complicated circuitry
wd40 leaves a conductive residue, which will no doubt upset things.. use crc co contact cleaner instead and see if that gets ya going again..

I've got a fancy motorola PRS that got drowned tho, worth at least 500 bucks so i didnt throw it away but it sat for like a year (well and truly dry) then i thought I'd have a squiz at it... speaker = poked well and truly, which is fine i can plug in an external speaker, but when transmitting it would pulsate and do random shit, so i took it apart and carefully cleaned every contact and circuit on the pcb with a cotton bud and solvent, hey presto works good as new !
motorola were going to charge about $100 just to look at it . . .

My one came from chevrolet usa actually, checked the digits

even the rover engines were pretty bullet proof... check out "88 in a day" on youtube, they get an old 2 and a quarter petrol motor thats been sitting for 10 years, full to the brim with water - and within an hour its running

these jappa things... a bloody sensor on a sensor that controls a sensor . . . keep it simple stupid

Id try spraying the electrics with 2.26 crc and otherwise pull the computer and stick it in the hotwater cupboard to see if drying it out properly restores it. Works will cellphones so who knows.
Could try a spare one if someones got one you can borrow to see if that fixes it to avoid having to buy one.
Converting to manual shift doesn't seem to be too difficult from what I've read. Plenty on the net about it and its been done on here. I'd go that way if I was in your position.

Water is no big deal to electronics it is the mix of water and power that is a problem. Best thing to do if something gets wet is pull the power straight away doesnt matter if its a cell phone in the toilet or a cars computer same thing goes. I often pull circuit boards out of things like tv's that have had a bottle of coke spilled on it and put the board in the sink with warm soapy water to give it a good clean. So long as you wash it afterwards with IPA (or contact cleaner will do) then leave it somewhere warm for a day or two they usually go fine. All the damage gets done by not cleaning the crap off and people that keep trying to turn things on to see if its fixed its self..

How has half of what you've been saying been of any help regarding fixing a truck thats gotten wet and is stuck in limp mode.
It would be nice if people could stay on topic and not fill threads with crap which is unrelated. If i have a similar problem in the future it would be nice to search and get an answer not dig through a pile of unrelated posts. Why state the obvious. More than just myself and pedro find this a pain in the ass. Post count isn't everything man.

actually 90% of what I posted was useful/helpful toward fixing an ecu... that was until pedro came and made his dumbass statement, followed by your dig at landrovers...
things I added:
wd40 is conductive so spraying it on circuits is not a good idea.
use of crc co contact cleaner instead.
solvent & cotton buds used to clean the pcb on my drowned radio which worked, its now 100% working again (besides the speaker, which is a paper cone and cannot be "fixed"..)
so yeah, comments were on topic until pedro/you came along?

1: I've never rubished anyone elses opinion, everyone is entitled to one and I respect others input.
2: I've not picked a fight with anyone, merely retaliated to bullshit comments that weren't neccesary or helpful to anyone.
3: the posts in the thread you are referring to ("raving abouit landies") was in response to someone who wanted a cheap bush-hack, IMO you cannot surpass a landy for a cheap bush-hack...
4: please copy and paste a single post of mine that has been confrontational besides the most recent, telling someone to put their money where their mouth is or stfu . . . (the same old comments get old real fast)
5: its people like that which make me wonder why I bother to give my input to a forum such as this, when every positive and helpful comment I make is met with a negative or derogatory response.

I'm sure we all understand how much your into landys, and thats fine, just don't needa hear about it every post in multiple threads.
You could probably help landy owners with problems better than I could....I hated mine and biffed it in short order
I like many others tend to read most anything that sounds interesting and it doesn't do you any favours when those sorta posts just keep popping up. Also the challenge although humourous is kinda unrealistic really....I mean a stock landy vs anything???

regarding this thread my point was, I like to leave the computer at home when I go drive through a river

I wasn't relating specifically to landrovers, just pre-computerised trucks.....

I've yet to have someone follow me in another truck that didnt get stuck where I didn't.. safaris/luxes/zooks/ladas/isuzus but maybe they were just shit drivers....
Like I said before, I give merit where its due for all makes and models, I'm not completely biased ya know......... maybe if you read the threads in their entirety and not selectively read my posts you would see this....
I thought I was adding relative information to this thread regarding an ecu.. I've had alot of dealings with electronic components over the years and I've learned a trick or two...
I'm wondering if nissan shouldn't have put the ecu somewhere more intelligent than the footwell... i think toyotas have theirs in the footwell too?
seems kind of doomed to me, maybe re-routing the wiring and relocating the ecu someplace better is a good idea....
If the moderator would like to delete all the non-related posts, go for gold....

Have to agree, it's a shite of a place to put the ECU. I get my next GQ this weekend, and it's auto
