80 Series Cruiser Build

Post by wjw »

Having sold my Prado to pay for training, I now have a new job so have bought an 80 series cruiser as my new toy. It's factory standard at the moment, but does have dual diff locks and the chiller :-)

Last night we mocked up the snorkel, as my arm fitted between the guards without any issues we are running the snorkel inside the guard.

Thinking about the front bumper, pondering on doing the same as the Prado, 3", 5mm tube with weldable bends. Can do it all ourselves then.

Went down the Ashley on Wednesday and found out she leaks like a sieve. Took the carpets out and found why the drivers seat was loose, one of the captive nuts was no longer captive.

Trying to decide what to do about carpet now......

I biffed mine after the famous drowning, it stunk of deer and pigs anyway and a couple of the floor bungs have been mis-placed, so I don't run carpet anymore.

Its a teeny wee bit noisy, but in the future I plan to rip out the seats etc and throw down some bed liner or similar for protection.

With the wheeling that gets done I no longer have to worry about climbing into truck with muddy boots etc

p.s. if you do decide not to run any carpet, make sure you get some carpet offcuts for floors and they get mighty cold in the snow and ice

I did lots of looking around as wanted to paint entire vehicle with it. Found out that hippo liner is real shit and wears badly.

There are others that do a much better job. Getting it done professionally would be the best i think.

Go talk to the boys at either RJ Patersons or Spraystore they both have heaps of different options, i think spray store sell the rhino liner that gets sprayed in ute decks etc.
Toyota Landcruiser FJ40, front and rear lockers, 35" simex.
Toyota FJ45 build in progress.
Tires are like boobs, they always look big until you have played with them for a while, then you just want a bigger set.

Great snorkel setup there! From memory, we used a chassis paint last time, wears well, flexible, and resists chipping, oil, petrol etc. Doesn't spray on smooth, more of an "orange peel" look.

Just out of interest, how do you find the 80 compared to the Prado? Need something smaller for the misses but has to be 7 seater. Just want enough power with good economy, but want to make sure it's not a huge step backwards....

It would depend on what year 80 series. I worked out the costs of building another prado compared to an 80. If it was going to be purely for daily driving, occasional off road use (ie no Grade 4+) and if I had less kids then I would have bought another Prado.

Even though I have the 80' I still miss the Prado. One of the main differences is that the 80' I have is a 90 and the Prado was a 93/94 so the Prado was alot more refined anyway.

You will struggle for space in the Prado with kids if you need to use all 7 seats.

Well After the earthquake things have moved rather fast. The Mrs wants the rear seats in so last friday I went over to Burkes Engineering to discuss the third Row. Verbal price of $1000 installed was given, so I jumped at that. Truck goes in on Wednesday, final price by mid afternoon and all going well will be certified on Friday.

So spoke to Rick on Friday night, he says well we better get that lift in, so this morning, we installed the springs and shocks. Only snag was my tyres and rims were in his workshop when the roof caved in, have them now, but two of them are bent. Fortunately Rick has lent me his beadlocked silverstones for the cert which is great. His Jeep locks sad on my old 31's... he wouldn't let me take a photo of it thought :-(

So the 80 now looks like this:

Will get some better photos when I get chance.

I only put the 3" lift springs in, 6" is too much for me as its my daily driver. Also as the spring spacers don't keep the springs captive, my certifier wouldn't cert them anyway.

Can measure with the 3" lift if you want? don't get the truck back till Friday though.

Cheers,

Bill
