18R engine swap??

Post by Macca »

Have an unusual question for the people in the know to ponder. I have purchased a 79 flatdeck  2wd  hilux to use for a rabbit shooting truck  . It has an 18r in it at the moment but it is dead. what other motors fit reasonably easy. Not worried bout wof as it is farm use only so if it needs mounts or looks rough i dont care. So any tips on what engine to get? ordoes someone out there have an old 18r there keen to get rid of.
key word is it needs to be CHEAP.
so any help would be great

virtually any carb'd R series... 16R, 18R, 20R or 22R... you can find them in old celicas and coronas among other things...

You should find them for next to nothing (16/18 anyway)... although 22R's still hold a good price.

Just to confuse things more i have purchased a rolling chassis for a 91 3vz. No motor but has auto box/transfer case with diffs. (front diff swapped to my surf as i blew spiders gears to peices and will swap rear soon as its a LSD  )
But any way i am wanting to combine the two trucks. Surf chassis, mayb shortend with the body and shortened deck off the rn41r i have. The problem at the moment is motive power, or lack of i should say. Does anyone know if there is any other engines that will bolt to the 3vz's auto? Also if not is there any other gbox that will bolt to the transfer from this box??
The main proviso is that its cheap and dosent need a computer to run it if at all possible.
Or other option is to sell whole trans/gbox setup and purchase an engine/ box and transfer to fit into the chassis? but price?

I know of a 3Y-E that should bolt up with a bellhousing change... 2 litre fuel injected... not grunty but it might solve your problem.

How much computer work needed to get it going?. Not too worried bout grunt as its only for shooting off and mayb playing where i would break my daily driver?
Main thing is i can work mechanical things but car comps give me the sh**s as i dont have a clue with them
sounds interesting tho

that wouldnt be my 3ye by any chance would it. in which case yip its still up for sale. i dont imagine electrics would be to hard. you can take all the wireing you want out of the truck, as long as your not cutting anything then i dont see why it would be to hard. to ive never dont it before lol.

Yep, t'was yours I was referring to... shouldn't be hard to get running - they are fairly basic... just thinking about that one since its already set up for an auto. IF you were worried I could sell you a 3Y carbed one to go with the 3YE so if it all went wrong you could bolt the carbs on it and have some spares.

Right have had a talk to the other guys involved and we would like a price for the 3ye an idea of what bell housing we need and a rough estimate at price for that?
also is the 3y carb engine a runner?? could also be an option as CHEAP is the main idea with these guys

you can have the 3ye for $240, i have been told that they are woth about 300 . i am part way through getting it out and have been abit lazy and cut some hoses and crap so you can have it abit cheaper to allow for the cost of this. I imagine the bell housing will fit as it is in a surf with an auto box will hopefully have it fully out within a week.
