Daymoz excuse

Post by daymo »

Well an excuse to be out in the shed at least. This is my first go at building up a vehicle, so we will see how we go, it won't happen overnight, but will happen.

We already have and use an escudo, fairly standard, but as the years of offroad havn't been kind, is now bound to a trailer.

What can I say, picked up a nearly free (Zuk G16A 16v inj auto) yesterday, just purchased off trademe. (running gear complete, seized engine so the listing said).

Its a long drive from Christchurch to Clinton and back in a day, but worth it.

This vehicle (bar the obvious) is pretty much complete, in terms of running gear. Even still has the keys. The only things we have picked up on are no plugs, distributor, alternator, front hubs, and someone has had a good go at pulling the interior apart. (already stripped, good start for cage)

The oils in both the engine and auto gearbox look good.

The guy I got it off said he got it from a wrecker, as it had a pretty sweet set up for a hard lid on a soft top, and put that on his, so doesn't know the history. He had a go at trying to get it going a while back apparently, put a battery in, nope don't turn over, its seized, thats it, he said.

Once home we were able to more closely inspect our prize. He had taken the headers off as was considering keeping them, but threw them in for us as well.

At the exhaust exit from the head, there is a lot of gunk (oil? been sitting for about 4 years) built up from cylinder 3, and a small amount coming from 4. Have an inkling it could be a buggered cylinder ring.

Any other ideas? as we have only just given it a quick eyeball over.

If so how long was it driven for, and has it gouged the block.

First thing, get it running!!! :D

May be easier, cheaper to find a second hand short block, and put that in.

Honestly not to sure which way I want to go at the mo, but this is what I have to start with.

The body itself isn't in to bad a shape. Looked in to the registration and it has lapsed/been deregistered. What is involved with getting a vehicle revinned, as having a roadworthy truck would make life a little easier. Can head out in the evenings etc, and participate in trips with different beginning and end points.

looking at it i'd suggest building as a purpose vehical and registering it as home built, that way it wont be subject to the more stringent ltsa revin proccess which requires it basically to have all new seatbelts, brakes, etc. as apposed to a home build where you can employ brakes from different brands of vehicles same with seats, dashboards, steering column, hubs, axles, engine, and gearbox combinations.

this is how i got around modifying my deregistered LN56 to the following mix n match.

Rb30 Vl commodore block
Rb25 nissan skyline head and induction
nissan laurel gearbox
Subaru legacy front calipers
Ford falcon rear diff
jeep cherokee bucket seats
R33 nissan skyline dash trim and instrument cluster
toyota prado/landcruiser front lights and grill

it also allowed me to make changes to the chassi and cab panels
to allow for intercooler piping and notching the rails to allow more travel for the suspension etc.

When it went back on the road it was regestered as a home built utility vehicle.

Thanks Bud. Will keep that in mind.

Stripped the engine down and it certainly wasn't seized, but found this instead.

Trouble is it has damaged the crank. The head is also quite pitted where the camshaft sits, so both head and block are stuffed. Thought I could have salvaged at least one of them. :(

On the backburner for now till I can come up with another suitable repower.

In my recent experience, this is incorrect, aslong as its be registered in NZ before it does not need new brakes, yadda yadda yadda.

Cheers Daniel
