smith and smith glass....

Post by wopass »

well after trying all the usual fixes to stop water comming into the cab and soaking the floors when it rained i thought i would try and find out exactly where it was comming in...

sat in truck in the pouring rain the other day and found it...the windscreen leaks like a fkn sieve (wich is quite normal from what i hear for them)

its a smith and smith windscreen so no probs, garunteed right.... wrong!!

ring them up and tell them the story

nope not garunteed cos it was the last owner that had the screen replaced...

so all the advertising of garunteed workmanship and quality is bullshit, the only thing thats garunteed is the reciept to the person that had it done.

so to sum up

fcuk you smith and smith glass bad advertising from me to everyone i know.

I've had these useless bastards replace the nissan once and my town car once. Both leaked. Had them try and fix one to no avail, leaked even more. Last time I broke a windscreen I said no to smith and smith, in fact I let the insurance company know how bad they actually were. Recommended they change to Canterbury windscreens here in CHCH as their fixer. Jas has fixed my saf and wife's mistral; and no leaks. Come on, how fing hard can it be!

When my back window got busted a couple of years ago the insurance company said just take it down to Smith and Smith and they'll sort it all out for me, so I drove the 1.5hr round trip over there so they could get the details off the truck and arange an apointment to get it fixed. I took it back for the booking and left it with them for the day, when I went to pick it up there was a flat perspex piece of plexiglass installed instead of the curved piece of glass.... it looked like a piece of shit and you couldnt even see through it properly, when I made it clear I wouldnt be accepting the repair I went through 4 different staff members who were all adament that it wasnt possible to replace that shape glass untill they retracted and decided it was only a tempory repair untill they could replace the glass.

So I spent the next 2 months ringing them every 2 weeks coz they wouldnt ring me asking what their progress was, the tossers were trying to get a secondhand piece of glass and over the 2 months sourced all sorts of 40 series windows, hilux windows and all sorts of shit despite me telling them they wouldnt find a secondhand rear window for a 70 series cab/chassis. After their farking around for 2 months I went down to toyota and got the part number and price for a replacement window and took it down to them and told them to order one before they had a few windows to replace in their office

A month later I took the truck in to get it fitted, the young prick that installed it decided to do some panelbeating on the back of the cab beside the window with a big hammer leaving bruises on the panel and then thought he'd do a few wheelies in my truck inside the workshop while I was sitting in the waiting room... farking tossers

Now I get my panelbeater to jack up his local mobile windscreen guy and have never had a problem since

I've only used them once through insurance as they wouldn't let me go through Jase.

The insurance company was under the impression that Smith & Smith would have it replaced for me within 24hrs. Took them over a week to sort it out and that was after I rang them about 5 times and got bounced between people.

The guy who replaced it was all good though. Only had the truck for another 2 weeks but I'm pretty sure there was no leaks so no problems on that front.

Luckily I was only replacing it due to a few chips and wanting it a bit tidier since I was selling it but if it had been completely facked I doubt they would have done it any sooner.

Same sort of thing as Tony's Tyre service though really. Bigger company, not everyone working for them is loyal or experienced and to many fingers in the 'management' pie.

had a broken window in my van ,no problem ring insurance who instructed me to take it down to s&s and they would replace it while i waited .no problem with screen just give them your chassis no before you go and it will be waiting for u (famous last words ) arrive there and are told it will be ready this arvo (it was 8.15am ) o well .waited for a pickup from my wife and twiddled thumbs all day .went to pick up at 4pm and van is sitting there with no glass in it .sorry sir (they said) but there is rust around the edges so we cant put the screen in until its fixed .GREAT i thought ,o well at least they told me.toke it home with no glass in the rain .fun NOT.got my panelbeater mate around and had a look .quick buff was all it needed then some por15 and than spray bomb .all done in one night .rang s&s again to book it in again ,no problem sir how does next wednesday sound as we are now fully booked(today was wednesday)not good i said as its my work van and no work no money .after a bit of a rant they managed to get one of there mobile guys to come round that night and put it in .SWEET i thought .so around he comes and in it goes GREAT .then he starts to clean up and while wiping down around the screen with some chemical he rubs off half the paint we had put on AND they lost one of the trim clips.oh well at least its done .two days later it rains over night and low and behold all my paperwork on the front seat gets wet .ring them up ,bring it in sir and we,ll have a look .rock on down next day ,guy comes out to see ,hmmm he says i think it will have to come out again .make an appointment and we will sort it out.another day without my van. Go to pick it up and they tell me that the windscreen is fine its my paint thats the problem (experienced panelbeater mate helped me do it )then they proceed to tell me that i should be charged as it was nothing to do with them.fcukin wankers .window still leaks just waiting a bit before a "stone " hits my windscreen and i'll get another one .certainly not back to s&s. total of 3.5 days off the road not earning money (just had enough to put beer in the fridge, kids were a bit hungry thou) not going back to them EVER :x

Hi Fellas. Got my Prado screen done by smith and smith in whakatane. What a cockup. After stuffing up 3 goes at it and using the wrong finisher strip twice and buggering the genuine one once, I threw my toys out of the cot with my insurance company and refused to let them touch it again. The guys I finally took it to got it right 1st time. They said that a major part of their work is fixing S ans S muckups. Cheers, Derb.

Gotta love big companies. When i was still working in NZ we got all our work vans done at smith and smith in glenfield and never had a single problem. But heaps of guys will now read some of thread and never go there. Amazing what a couple of shit operators can do to a big business.

We refuse to use S&S at work. Every job they have done they have stuffed up.
Just 1 example - when a 100 series w/screen leaks, from insufficient sealing, it leaks all over the ECU's rendering them useless. And S&S won't cover the costs of the repairs either.

We use Fast Autoglass now. Very good service and workmanship.
Never had a problem with them or their work!

Its had a few screens now in the Prado
And always with them down in Henderson.
In fact all my screens in cars over the years have been a S and S job.
Can't fault them.....

Had two cock ups from S & S (insurance co said to go there) 1st was a replacement screen in the work Rodeo and they changed the screen ok then put the mobile phone ariel back in the path of the wipers, not a biggy but the next really pissed me off.Got a new Ford Ranger for work, had 3000 ks on it and screen got hit so insurance company said take it to S & S. Dropped it off and was told it would be ready in the afternoon Went to pick it up and while looking at the job i noticed that they had chipped the paint on not one pillar but both front pillars. The branch manager tried to tell me that it was like that when it came in. Not so i said, we then had what i would call an animated discussion regards his parentage :x . The end result is that we had it repaired then sent the bill to S & S. As the outer pillar is part of the front door frame, both front doors required a full repaint. Needless to say our insurance company no longer use's S & S.

My old boss refuses to use them any more also. Replaced a windscreen in our truck while i sat and waited after working all day. Tried to put the wrong screen in, decided they needed to order the correct one and put the (now even more broken) old screen back in so I could use the truck the next day, then realised they had the correct screen in stock all along, swapped them back out again. Scratched the new paint on the pillars removing the stone guard, lost some of the stone guard nuts and just sikaflex'd the bolts in place

I had the screen replaced in my car. 2 year old $60k car and it leaked filling the driver sidefoot well with water and soaking everything. Took it back to them and complained. They said they'd pull the screen out and replace it which they did. That stopped the leak but the lying pricks said the screen wasn't leaking in the first place.
I'll never go back. All they had to do was replace the screen, say sorry and clean the carpets then I'd have been happy as Larry. After all we all know mistakes happen but it is how a company deals with them that's makes the difference.

I refuse to use s & s after it took them 3 days to replace the mirror in my wing mirror. Rung up the 0800 number and checked with customer service that they can do it,said yup thats fine juts take the car down there, they will remove the wing mirror, replace the glass and put it back together in a few hours...seemed all good to me

Took whole wing mirror off myself as I needed the car, left it with them and the lady on the counter said she would ring me once done.. 4.30pm rolls around, I ring them and they said "oh it hasn't been done yet" Same thing happened the next day, by this point It was getting beyond a joke and it had started to rain. So by the 3rd day I went down there on my break and let loose into the staff while other customers were around for added drama, lots of sorrys and excuses that electric mirrors are hard to replace, they haven't cut the glass straight, the wing mirror now vibrates like crap and I refused to pay for it.

Wow......I do auto glass for a living and if I did business like that I would have much work

Most of the vehicles you guys have mentioned are straight forward jobs that I have done a million of. I mean, let's face it, we're all human and we make mistakes, but if I get a leaker, I fix it. No questions asked :!:

There's quite a few tricks of the trade for Landcruisers (the rubber job ones) to stop them from leaking. Each one takes about 5 minutes. Man, I don't know why they do business like that

Dont know if I set a record...but when my screen broke my insurance sent me to S&S and new screen in, said I needed new rubber surround as factory one buggered, all good so that was done...1 week later BANG and broke again...S&S replaced again...to fast forward the story I'll just state that it had 6 replacement screens over 8 weeks.

Got fed up so told insurance company was crap and refused to go back for a 7th screen, said I wanted to try Novus. They said ok so Novus came out and did it mobile. Pulled screen out, said "hey there's a dob of goo on the rubber here right at the end of the crack", cleaned it off, put new screen in...all good forever...

WHAT A BUNCH OF MUPPETS AT S&S. Repeatedly I asked them if there was something around the edge that was stressing it there and they "had checked it every time and couldnt see anything that would do it" ... and get this ... "the car must be flexing which is not something we can do anything about so it's not our problem".

A second happy visit was for our road car, insurance only wanted it to go to S&S and it took them 9 days over 3 visits to fit a screen into a Toyota Camry wagon. First two times..."oh we just havent been able to get to it, can you drop it back in?"
