Funny Noise

Post by RoloverRover »

I have developed a strange and intermitant noise from i think my gearbox it sounds like a bearing chattering in its housing but when i reverse it then makes a really bad grinding sound slap it back into 1st and its gone all noises are as they should be for a while then after 2 or 3 k the faint bearing chatter retuerns any possible info would be appreciated as im at the point of either smashing it to small pieces with a big hammer or changing the gearbox out prob more likely change the box

Yep lol its the only peice of landi gear left in the drive train and its failed me (ld 28 donk with lj40 diffs and air shocks) so sorry i still have the landi springs and drive shafts in it but the box is a s3 with a s2 lay shaft or so i was told when i bought it. Do the s3 transfers fail very easily? Do i still call it a landrover if i put in a lux box?

S2a boxes were the strongest ones. Drop in a Suffix "b" gearbox for lower gearing in 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

Otherwise, I have a hilux box and tranfer in the surf for sale

I changed the oil in it today and apart from being a bit milky from a bit of water it was good as gold no fileings or lumps clean as its got me stuffed as what this noise is and why in reverse its fine for about 15-20 feet then all of a sudden it sounds so crunchy i am at an ends with tryin to work it out nothin makes sence with it

sounds like they layshaft bearing is coming to bits and the reverse gear sits on the layshaft ,there are no particular oils that will quieten it down if they are worn they are worn.
hope that helps

This does help thanks PBL now that you say it it makes perfect sence as to why the reverse makes such a racket but the other chatering noise still is a mystery as it is intermitant and is constant with road speed not engine speed i think their was a post saying their is a bronze bush that can become flogged i think perhaps this box might just be worn out it may be easier if i take turoa's advice and drop my series2 box in since it has had a fresh bearing kit in it just before it was given to me. Nothin so far has pointed to it being a simple problem  perhaps a hand full of saw dust is the key

I found the noise  it was nothin serious at all nor was it a box issue of all things it was the dust cover from the front of the rear diff pinion it had come lose ant was chattering on the shaft i only found it the other day but i do still have a horid sound after reversing 10ft or so and i know that it is a box prob for sure. But as for the funny noise that has now been cured with a temp fix of rtv till i get round to doing it properly
