Winch won't pull under load

Post by 3VILC »

As topic states really.. winch runs fine no load, but put a load on it and it just dies. Solenoids clunk but motor doesnt turn. Most likely theory? Just a motor full of mud I'm hoping

Somewhere in the system there is an electrical contact issue.
IE brushes dirty, commutator dirty carbon'd up.
Or solenoid doing the same or bad earth or bad battery connections.

The only other thing that comes to mind is the windings are on the way out and shorting under load.

Have fun

Cool that was my thoughts too. its been for a few muddy swims since i've had it. a few fairly deep ones the day it started playing up. so hopefully just needs a good clean out. starter occasionally does the same thing. on the good side my boss lost his license the other day so i've got the work van for 3 months. good oportunity to strip starter, alternator, and winch and give them a good clean out

Guts of the winch don't look too bad.
Although i presume the bus bar show in the photo is not supposed to be touching the rivet below it (plastic is melted suggesting they have touched or water has caused them to touch)
Sorry not great photo but it is the rivet directly inwards from the blue terminal post
