HELP - GQ IS SHUDDERING

Post by seven1seven »

Hi there, have just signed in hoping to get some answers from you guys.............................

I have a 95 SWB GQ SAFARI - 4.2 Turbo, first one I've owned and am pretty happy with it, however, lately it has developed a shuddering/jerking movement.

The Shuddering/Jerking used to occur between 25-60 km/hr and has now stretched upto 90-100. With the movement getting progressively worse.

Air and fuel filters have been changed and the fuel tank treated for water (as the truck was sitting in a barn unused for a while). I thought it could be the air manifold sensor, however, the engine idles/revs fine and no "Check Engine" light is on.

Any help?????

What coxsy said and heaps of other possiblities.
Wheel alignment is another. It its been doing it a while it should be really obvious by the wear on the front tyres, if it is that.

I would guess panhard also. Was the cause on my patrol.

I could feel mine in the steering wheel quite badly at a particular speed.

Otherwise wheel alignment or rod ends would be my next stop. Then maybe wheel bearings.

Also, check your rear drive-shaft for play, a dodgy UJ gives a nasty shudder too...... 8)

Hi, its as if the engine is missing, however at the 90-100 km speed the wheel starts to shake, which I put down to tyre balance.

Replaced the bushes today on the lower control arms (as there was quite a bit of play on the left one) + a wheel balance and alignment. A bit better but problem still there.

Maybe a better way of describing it is: It feels as if you are bunny hopping. As it is a fore/aft motion.

So if it is the enine missing stop doing suspension fixes!

It can only be so many things if it is engine related. Is yours auto or manual? Does it do it related to engine revs only or load and revs or speed only?
Does it do the miss when stationary?
Does the engine speed effect it or just road speed?

It could be water in the fuel. It could be an air leak. It could be a dodgy driveshaft.

I had dirty diesel when mine did a similar thing.

I wondered if it was engine related but thought from the first posts surely not

the shudder at 100kph though will more than likely be panhard bushes or King pin bearings

good luck with finding the issue .. It took me 4 months and lots of $$$$ to finally get rid of all the wobbles/clunks/knocks/bangs/vibrations and shuddering out of mine

drives like a new truck now though

He lives in Auckland. Somebody really needs to make contact with him to have a drive and get a better description of the fault. I am picking there could be more than one issue here.

he just left here, i drove the truck in a big circuit down to the airport rd then down to the motorway then back home, their is some i my opinion a slight shudder in it at 50 to 60 kmh in third, but its a 1995 turbo manual {nice driver] there a small vaccum hose which comes off the oil pressure sender which is not attached to anywhere and a sensor on the rear intake with wires cut broken?

Thanks to all you that offered ideas. Problem of shuddering / surging is sorted.

Left rear wheel bearing, castle nut had come adrift. Pulled the axle out, cleaned it up, old bearing back on, done up, tab washer up, sweet as a nut. Happy as f*#k.

Cheers
