head scratcher

Post by Crash bandicoot »

my rear Diff started whining so i'd thought i'd pull it out and replace the bearings etc.

its a 1990 3L v6 ssr surf

so i did the usual and took me truck into the shop, they took the vin number, did there computer thing and ordered some bearings for the pinion shaft and shims to boot.

here is where it gets tricky.

the diff is a 4.5:1(that much i know) but it looks nothing like any previous toyota hilux diff ive done,

the pinion has ten teeth
the crown has 43 teeth and the spiders are enclosed in a complete
steel casting.

we pulled it out and it's either a locker or a serious two way LSD.

me' camera isnt working but have found a picture of what it looks like.

Image
the issue is the bearings on the pinion are almost half the width again of the one's that were ordered.

and the bearings either side of the diff head are a larger diameter and about 5ml wider then the ones ordered too.

the boys at CAP are scratchin there heads so does any one here have an idea of what make of diff this is and where i could source new bearings?

10 teeth on pinion and 43 on crown wheel means your ratio is 4.3 : 1 not 4.5.

And the diff in the picture is a LSD

You will be able to get the wider bearings, they should be listed when you go back and swap the bearings

Ummm errr with 43 teeth on ring and 10 on pinion it will be a 4.3 to 1.... Not 4.5 to 1.

There are two sizes of bearings in toyota diffs.
Std 4 cylinder and what is called the V6 / Turbo diff.
The V6 diff is also in the 70 series Prados.

Have a read of this web site.

If "the boys at CAP" are a diff shop, I would be worried they can't ident this diff.....

thats what i thought too, but when you turn the wheel once the chalk mark on the drive shaft is 4 and a half turns,

if that is 4.3 that means the front one isnt standard either, being 4.2,4.5and 4.8 which toyota used.

also, the teeth are larger then that of a standard hilux diff. may explain why there is only 43 of them on the crown wheel,

also note the pinion shaft is shorter then the standard one i have in the shed.

4.3 is a common factory diff ratio. 4.2 is not.
