Oh I reckon they are on here or at least some one is.
After all they will all be members of the 'local' 4WD club as indicated earlier and members of 'that' club are on here.

They are also on dangerous grounds holding the vehicles against their demands for the full payment, even the slightly reduced $5,500.
Its morally wrong as will as legally. Giving 4WDing clubs a bad reputation.

The police need to be involved sooner rather than later. Hi jacking or blackmail, either way its illegal.

I would also consider going to the media as well.

x2

I've recovered people from there. Was $200. They were down the bottom with two stripped beads, flat fronts and a blown hub. I did it for free but said they didn't feel happy with that so chucked me some cash. Good dudes.

If some idiot i come across is buried and having a cry cos of their stupidity (And its within my skill level to recover) I'll say $500 or nah. Esp if they in mallprowling 4x4's or they have an attitude, or they've been drinking. If they good dudes I help em out for nothing as I've been in the situation where the roles were reversed but I was fully equipped and guys helped me get back to town. If its outside my skill level I'll tell em I'll radio or ring a mate or someone that can help them or give em a ride out.
From my experience every driver I've met/ been out with has had the same attitude as myself and are generally good dudes.

As far as breaking shit, I think tough shit really. Its not like consumables on a job sheet. 4x4 clubs don't reimburse members if they break stuff. Its your truck, your risk, your choice.
Breaking wire winch rope, plasma rope and that many straps is unreal and is either massivley exaggerated or weren't being used correctly/or in poor condition. :?
It was probably gonna break on the next trip anyways......

I don't have a problem with a small reimbursement maybe, a box of piss or a bit of cash but those numbers are insane  . People shouldn't be making a profit off it  . It'll just put people off getting into wheeling.

Please post what 4x4 club you're referring too. You are at a risk of being given shit for squealing to the public however so keep that in mind.

Don't let this experience put you off wheeling. Not all of us are like the guys you ran into.

Def subscribing to this shitstorm.....

have done a few recoverys up there nad to be honest all i made out of it was a box of beer...but they were mates

to rescue 2 trucks from the bomb site, 1k each total strangers... AND a box of beer

what they are trying to get out of you is replacement for all thier broken shit which was going to break anyway, not your problem.

offer them the 2.5k or court... 2.5k is a pretty decent reward for recovery from where you were.

Yeah wop is probably right about the price. I'd consider that generous but it might settle stuff. Make noises about court and see what they say.

It appears no written contract was signed but a verbal aggreement was entered into at a cost of "$1000 or more per vehicle".
Now as to how much "more" .
A general rule of thumb is around 10% variation with an estimate as this appears to be rather than a fixed cost quote.

You need to get some legal advise from a lawyer to find out where you stand.
Im dont think they have the right to hold your vehicles as sercurity against your debt.
A good starting offer would be around $2500 in total.... this in inline with the amount you agreed to pay...if they say no id approach the police & ask them to assist you to collect the vehicles ... then let them try to sue you to recover there costs & let them proove them in court.
You have a lot in your favour dont let them rip you off.
I also think these people should be exposed ..they are not the kind of 4wd people we want in our hobby.

kricky have been watching with interest

best that i can tell the cost discussion isnt about the 8odd grand but the differance between the $2k second quote to the $3650 as that is the only part that has any relavance to the whole thing.

Im with wopass here offer 2.5k and say thats the bill paid in full. broke gear and fuel costs dont come into the question as this would of been included in the first and second quotes.

personally going into that track with 1 winch is just mind blowing crazy and now you know why.

if the first quote was 8k then there would of been no discussion but as they did quote 1k per truck there is defernitly ground for you to arque

good luck and let this be a warning to others join a club and tackle tracks with the right people and trucks

cheers

without sounding like a smart ass, but what age are you and nationality?..
maybe your just not good on the keyboard but your wording and grammer and spelling etc suggests you may not be a kiwi... stab in the dark here, but if thats the case, and by going into this hard yakka track ill equipped, and if you are young, these guys who recovered you may have taken you as easy targets, thinking or assuming your not local or basically just have no idea, and they are trying to milk the shit out of you...

a price should have been agreed on and thats that..

and the fact that these guys have your trucks in their yard suggests that you are an easy target, how have you let them get away with holding your trucks in the first place????
aint no way ide let some clowns claim my truck untill payment.

they are milking it and your letting them get away with it, get your brothers and uncles and mates go to the yard with the cash you originally argeed on, give them a box a piss aswell, and get your trucks back

just been reading this topic, and to be honest what the hell are those buggy guys thinking!!

Ok, charging to recover broken trucks in a track regardless if you are prepared or ill prepared is fair enough, but as long as that figure is reasonable and agreed upon then it should be payed, but 8 grand and holding your trucks as ransom is just bullshit.

Sounds some people are wanting to build new buggies and saw someone they can take advantage of...

I dont really know any more than what I've read on the 2 threads but I'd guess that this was a private recovery done by individuals that belong to a 4x4 club rather than a sanctioned recovery done by the 4x4 club so you'd have to be a bit carefull about how anyone went about a 4x4 club name and shame? I'd also tend to think if that was the case the 4x4 club may be a bit concerned of negative publicity generated by some of its members?

like everyone else I'll be reading the outcome and feedback from the recovery guys with interest

all the more reason the club need o be told as its bad press towards 4x4s, and then the club can deal with the indivuals involed.

My 2c worth

Ive driven this track in a road warranted 70 series cruiser with 5 other trucks and a combination of approx 80 years of off roading experience 12 months ago

Its a track that guys with no experience and ill equipped trucks need to stay away from

It has already claimed lives

As it's already been said join a club and start taking part in Winch challenges then this track is an easier drive

This is a public forum and should be rememered before publishing names

I would be disappointed if the club I belong to followed the same example in recovering someone from our local area and charging for labour

Its still a strange situation especially if they are claiming to be a leader of a 4x4 club and signing emails with their name and possiblythe 4x4 club name or whatever. I see that as representing the club and that places some accountability with them...kinda....in my mind at least. But tread carefully, without the side of the story from the guys who recovered you it could be bad for the club even if the club itself wasn't involved as I'd be thinking the same as sadam regarding it not being a club sanctioned trip/recovery.

Like RD said it could be worth emailing this clubs president?
Name and shame is always a last resort....cops and club first, ore, fair go, anyone with ears next.

Update: They have reduced recovery cost to $2750 each truck today.

Tell em to F.OFF.
Pay the amount agreed to at the start and tell em to go sing for the rest.
BLOODY BURGLING C#NTS.
It scares me to think there are w@nkers like this out there that are out to make a fourtune out of others misfourtunes.
If I knew of someone in that predicament I would help as best I could at little or no cost.
If they still are retaining your trucks until payment get the police involved.
My 2 cents worth.

A personnel opinion only, not in any official capacity.
I have a reasonably good knowledge of the clubs around that area and have been thinking about who might be involved in this. If my guess is correct these people are not a 4 wheel drive club as such, but another community group whose members have 4 Wheel drive vehicles. From my knowledge of that group they are not likely to be concerned that they are giving 4wd clubs a bad name, which is a pity. May be some of the near by clubs or members would like to deny involvement. A personnel opinion only

Not getting off topic :D

When I went up that side last year by myself, there was a guy with a buggie/bathtub (with winches on both ends), still on the trailer in the car park, walked up the track after me and said that he would hang around till I returned (I said only going for a look, and will be back in 1/2 hour). I got to the long bog and turned around due to air leaking from left rear tire and bearing in mind I had at least 3 or 4 winches to get out of there. He was gutted when I made it out in 1 piece an hour later and just in time for the back tire to fall off the bead in the car park. All this shyt makes me wonder, what it would of cost if that "vulture" was needed to recover me
He was hanging out up there just to make some coin off unfortunate guys luck. Seams to be the culture down there to rip off out-of-towners :x
I'm glad now that I didn't go there earlier in the week like I wanted to

I just thought I would share this story.

As a high ranking committee member of a club, I would have no hestation in taking disaplinary action if any of my clubbies tried pulling a stunt like this because it would bring the club into disrepute.
Name and Shame

I agree with all the points raised and of the opinion, police, media, courts and any other sympathic parties should be notifyed ASAP.

Watching in anticipation :D

There are at least 6 guys who have commented in this thread who compete at National Level Winch Competition who are ACTUAL experts and have vehicles capable of actually recovering vehicles properly and not breaking anything and I'm sure would recover them for roughy an 8th of the price

This is a joke, tell them the same as what everyone else has said.. get stuffed
