Zeph's LN106 DC BOGGER

Post by zephyrheaven »

Here tis, as usual I forgot to take a pic 'before' but it was pretty sad
Done 503,000Km genuine - NZ new, had a new motor & box last year (motor was spankin from Ilam Toymota no less ouch)
Drove well so I bought it

Was going to spring it & wheel it & leave it at that, then there was a delay in 15X8's in black & Hankook didnt have RT03's in 35's at the time (I swear, anytime I start making something - nothing is available??!!) so I had it panel & painted in the interim then everything arrived at once
Been flatout at work but managed to spring it & wheel it for now, stereo etc all sorted
Now hunting a tuffdeck & some mud to go play in

*Its my shiney LOL

(CANT UPLOAD A PIC BECAUSE EVEN THO ITS WAY UNDER 801 PIXELS WIDE THE WEBSITE SAYS IT AINT) FAIL

People in Chch might want to be wary of where they get their springs from - Ive had no end of problems with some place that I wont mention here but it aint Rick & it aint Peter if thats any help - I nearly tore the lot out & chucked em where his sun didnt shine  , if it was a customers truck I would have - Im just too calm for that ha ha

Cheers

Yeah the 2.8 is doing really well so far, the plan was to 2JZ it straight away but budget blowout means I will stick with the diesel for a bit
Everyone said the 2.8 would be utter rubbish & my gearing would be poop round town - so far Im first away at the lights (chch drivers notoriously slow off the line lol) , its a challenge near 100k but it cruises well
The test will be how much torque is left over for 'trouble' spots in the mud hmmm

Oh & havent used 5th gear yet ha ha

well, think Ive solved the steering / tracking gremlins - fitted a big bore raw steering damper - what a difference!!?

Im starting to think it could actually handle a corner some day

35's working well, motor seems to drive it all ok thus far

Well, my kidneys are killing me - I was told these springs would settle in - Ive had the rears out 3 times & back to the maker - lord I wish I had listened to the people in the know

Im about to rip them out again & give up - buy other ones & be happier I hope

Does anyone know what the "Ironman Suspension" shop down waterloo road behind the shell is up to? I cant find a contact # for them & they are never open when I go by?

I need a 3" lift with some suspension travel - its rock solid at the rear & the RF is sagging already - it bump steers into the oncoming lane like you wouldnt believe

Time for action!

   See, this is the reason why Hilux's are crap

You will never get it to ride nicely or steer properly unless you:

 Increase the length of the springs at both ends (rears up front, coon rears, involves fab work on the chassis to move spring purch's), it will be better, but never great. Letting your tyres down to 30psi or less when you have nio load in the tray would make the biggest difference.

 Fit X over steering to iliminate the bump steer caused by the standard "C" arm system following a big lift (3" is big)

Nice straight truck though!!!

Find and fit a Turbo + Manifold etc of a 2.4 2lte Surf, its all bolt on parts and will get her moving a bit better

for a little more than the price you pay for the massive lift you are doing you could.
*do a body lift, max 50mm, affects virtually nothing as far as driveability goes.
* rears up front with high-steer kit, (softens the front)
* raised rears with some leafs removed to soften the ride and make it flex.

with rears up front you dont need the massive lift to clear the tyres as the diff is moved forward, so no gaurd rub and mint steering

Thanks team - yip wasnt expecting Ferrari type handling lol, just wanted to take a bit of the harshness out

I did the high steer & springs allow diff further forward - but the springs are too hard imho, ok for towing etc but it aint ever going to do that

I gave the guy the whole rundown what I wanted & its a shame but nothing is right

Thanks, will give ironman a ring - i like the height of that black one on trademe with EFS springs - but his shackles look crazy big to me = not like

Cheers!

Not sure about different brands, but I don't think you are going to get any joy out of any after market spring set up as they always use the stock mounting points. The reason these ride so harshly is they were designed for carrying loads and the springs are quite short, if you want cart springs to be more comfortable and give you some lift, then they need to be longer with the correct arch in them. A bigger arch over the same length as std just equals a hard as hell ride and shitty articulation.
Ugly is a state of mind..... and the state of my truck!
