Raising a kzn130 surf on a budget?

hi guys, im looking into doing a suspension lift on my 1993 surf and im wondering what ways people have gone, and what theyve used and if they know of any places that are good value? ive heard i can get rear springs and rear shocks and raise the front via the torsion bars is this correct or a stupid way of doing it? any help and ideas would be great

may pay to look at getting good LSD's installed first, they will get you more places then a suspension lift.

If you have, then good on you.

I used RAW nitro shock absorbers and Dobi springs, we lengthened the top arms on the rear diff to keep the drive shaft yoke angle similar to factory.

the front lower arms have offset bushes which you will need to adjust when altering the torsion bars.

you will have to look at the panhard rod too as the more you raise it the further out to the side it will push the rear axle.

as well as the diff breathers needing extension

Suspension lift is easy ... i just brought some + 50mm coils..threw them in the back & adjusted the torsion bars up a little.
Ideally you should also ether put an adjustable panhard rod in or make up a panhard drop bracket ..else the body will sometime be on a slight angle.
Also a good idea to raise the brake proportioning valve up 50mm.
I didnt change my factory shocks at all...they were plenty long enough.
If you do decide to put new shocks in dont get real hard ones... hilux is not too heavy youll only make it ride real hard if you do.
The hardest part is putting the factory length panhard rod back in.

oh sweet, where abouts did you purchase your lifted springs from? and also where would i be able to find an adjustable rear panhard rod from? any idea on prices you paid if you can rememeber? cheers again.

Sorry..cant remember how much my springs were ... i made the panhard rod myself...got springs off the net.... you can get differnet types of sprins too... some only 40mm lift & some are designed to be stiffer to carry more weight

Standard 80 series springs will lift the back 50mm

Don't wind the front up more than 30mm or you will have no down travel.
I run mine flat in front with 50mm in the rear and when loaded with gear it sits flat

I would recommend changing the shocks though , my flex is limited a lot by my 50mm lift shocks and I will be changing soon to different shock.

Was also out with a stock standard Surf over new years, and rear travel with the rear sway bar removed was limited by factory shocks.

Pan hard drop bracket can be made reasonably cheaply , drawings available online.

In my opinion Toyota LSD are crap , shim em up good and 10k later they are like an open diff again , locker is much better opion.

. Where abouts could I find the drop down bracket drawings? is it best to run adjustable rod or just use a drop down brackt? Yeah I'll hopefully get shocks the same time, any decent places in Auckland for purchasing the parts, I'll fit them at work just after a decent price.

Hey guys I've been looking at making a drop bracket for my panhard rod, in you opinion would you guys make the standard rod adjustable or make a drop bracket? I'll do which ever is more recommended

If I'm to chuck in a set of 50mm lifted springs into the rear of the surf am I going to need to change anything with the panhard rod and brake lines? It's only if I go higher correct?

Ideally, you need to keep the Panhard rod at the same angle to the axle as original. Best way is to fit a new bracket.

Oh sweet cheers, would that also count if im doing a baby lift by say 50mm springs. No body lift or anything just yet I'm on a small budget coming up to gf birthday haha!

Should be ok. Just to show the difference though, once you've got the lift in place, disconnect one end of the Panhard with the vehicle sitting on level ground and you'll see how far the axle is now being pulled over. A drop bracket would come down and across to make up that difference.

when you say 80 series crusier springs fit the rear. are these rear or fronts form the cruiser? and did you mod the spring housing? or are they same as 130?

also is a body lift an even cheaper alternative? or does it have a different function? other than bigger tyres?

I would save up and do it once, do it properly. Springs aren't too bad to buy and if you get something like a rancho 9000xl which I had for a few years they are adjustable. It may cost you 1000 to buy everything but you will be happy with it. 80 series land crusier springs are the same but just longer and the spring rate is different. I tried this once and the springs I got were stuffed so I threw them away and went and got some. Body lifts are good but you need a cert for it so a suspension lift in the mean time is good.
