Which tyres?

Post by tonybridge »

Sorry to bring up this old saw, guys, but I need opinions!

I bought a 2010 Ranger to replace my decrepit Surf about 9 months ago (my accountant told me to buy a double-cab, since there is no FBT payable on one) and I haven't regretted it.After working on my new book, Out There South, and learning that Firestone Dueller A/T's just don't cut it when the going gets tough, I replaced the Firestones with Cooper A/T,s
So far I have had 3 punctures, stones piercing the main tread with less than 20 000km on them.Under impressed
So they Are going!Any thoughts about what to buy( 255/70/16)?
Need:
Long life
Good onroad performance
Strong sidewalls
Dirt/gravel durability( I drive like a maniac)

All opinions gratefully received!
Many thanks

you will find that with any a/t's you will find sharp rocks will penetrate the tyre casing causing punctures and unrepairable damage.

normally its the smaller sharp stones that do all the damage not the big ones.

mud tyres dont really get punctured by sharp rocks as they have like 12mm tread and the tread blocks keep the rest of the casing off the ground and the sharp rocks get in the tread block or miss the rest of the tyre.

I have been running Kingstar RF03 (265/75R16) on my Hilux work truck liked them so much I put a set on our 2000 Surf just about to get another set for work truck about 90000km.
Great on road and unsealed roads stable and informative, good in slippy grassy paddocks and muddy tracks and river beds, not so good in deep mud.
Priced very well.
I know this is not a big name tyre (but is part of the Hankook group) and do not look much but do the job very well I have no hesitation in saying have a look.

I haven't bothered with AT's for a long time as they really only give you a false sense of security.
On my wife's GQ that sees mainly road duties I've been running Savero MT's for the past 6 years. First set were 265/75 x16 and the second 33x12.5x15. In reality the performance difference is very minimal so not worth worrying about it but if you need to go offroad then you have a far greater capability.

Personally i think the differences between radial MT brands offroad are so small that it is irrelevant and onroad there seems to be a few that excel. The Savero MT has a reputation for long long life and good manners, same for BFG (but at a cost), The new Kumho hasn't been getting good wraps for milage but seem to be good handling etc. The Maxxis Buckshot also seems to be getting good wraps but this is second hand info. (I'm not saying the rest are rubbish I just don't have any real experience)

Personally i think AT's give you the offroad performance of an HT and the onroad performance of an MT so why would you bother with a tyre that is the worst of everything. AT's are really designed for dry whether offroad so aren't any good for NZ.

Im running Kuhmo KL71 on my surf... had good results in snow , mud , rocks & rivers & on the road..not used it in much sand as yet.
Being direction they are great for digging myself out in reverse.
Are very quiet on the road.
They havnt worn much but have heard can wear faster on a heavier truck (Nissan Safari)

I have found them to be very shore footed in the rain with very little slipping (on more than others ).
I have a set of KL71 for play and find them very noisy at high way speeds with less road feel than the RF03.
As it stands all tyres are a compromise it's just where you like the balance from HT - AT - MT.
For me I am not to an aggressive driver I drive at 90-100km in the Hilux and 100-110km in the Surf on road, and like to pick a line rather than just stand on the gas off road (5L engine's don't have much power), Dirt/Gravel roads I don't mind pushing it along especially one's I know

That's my 2 cents worth
