Engine rumble

Post by Hombrey »

Guys suspect this is common as have heard it on other TD42's. Its an irregular rumble/rattle and sounds like its coimng from the waterpump or front of the engine somewhere? Like something hitting an aluminium cover somewhere. Want to sort it as it does not sound great but not sure whats causing it. Almost sounds like a timing chain rattle?? Do these things have tensioners that wear and are they easy enough to replace? Anyway, ideas or experience on this would be helpful. Thanks.

Other than your standard diesel rattle....

timing is geared.
Mine was the water pump. Had lots of shaft play and rumbled real bad. Couldn't tell from inside but mates outside said it was real bad when driving away.

Running two stroke oil in the fuel quietened the engine/injectorpump down a bit too.

Yeah i can't really hear it in the truck but round the front it sounds bad like an irregular rumble. I thought it sounded like water pump. So was the play in yours shaft in and out movement. Can you feel it by just dropping the belt off?

I could see mine with the belt on   Was side to side on mine. You should be able to feel it quite easily if its there.

This one you got to be real careful.
Use a big screw driver like a stethoscope or buy a proper one from super cheap or somewhere like that.
Put one end to your ear and prob around with engine running.
Have never had a noise I can't find with this method in engines or drive trains

 have heard a noise like that once before. Turned out to be the alternator. One of the long bolts that hold them together was broken and the head was hitting the cooling fan.
I keep looking for the loose nut behind the wheel, but I can't find it!!

No pisstake at all...I've been putting in 2T for over a year and as said, way quieter engine and happy inj pump.

no pisstake

works,

I run 1:200 mix every second tankful to keep the pump lubed, works as well as the diesel additives, and really makes a noticeable difference to the clatter, so much so on my truck the wife knows instantly which tank it's on.

some people say it improves economy and power, cant say if it made any difference, there other than the truck "seems" smoother to drive when its got oil in it. Im doing it to safeguard as much as possible the pump since we are forced to use that shitty stuff they try and palm off to us as diesel.
