70s and 40s Spring Plate's

Post by oldblue »

This may be of interest to someone: If you are then i will sketch out the plan view, with the hole positions etc . Only differance between 40s & 70s is the shocky pins. Also you may find it hard to press such a tight pressing. They are legel if the are pressed , but NOT welded

I'm looking at doing the exact same thing. Do you have someone who can make these? If so at what price i would definitely take 2 complete sets if possible..........

I hadn't thought of making any more , but if you insist I could find out if the price of the pressing has changed, as i havn't made any for a couple of years. You would of noticed 2 differant types,A is for the front of 70s &B is for the rear of 70s & F&R of 40s. The threads on the U bolt need to be run down 30mm, which is hard if you don't have a die nut and tube type holder. After market U bolts , have longer threads multiply that X 8 = extra costs.

I would want to get new u bolts anyway. So definitely keen, depending on price of course. The old plates are constantly getting hung up on ruts etc so this setup would have to be an improvement. Surely there would be a few of us here who would be interested..........

Also, on 70s with factory electric lockers , the rear shockys are on the trailing (rear) of the axle,on none locker type the shocks are one in front and one behind the axle. The front U bolts on 70s need to be splayed about 5degees per side. Give me a day or two to get a price on the pressings.

Me too... A couple of questions though.

1. Why are the angles different from front to back? (90 and 95Deg)
2. Why do you have the 5mm plate insert?

PS. couldn't find any pics on page 14 of users pics?

Because the U Bolts on front of 70s are spread 5degrees, it keeps the nuts dead square to the plate.
The extra plate is to give enough thickness for the spring centre nut.
The pixs are in a group, click on the one about Prado spring removel.
Can someone can tell me how to name the album.

Once you go into your album at the top right there is a box with admin options. click on this, then go down to properties. Put your album name in the title box. Then scroll to bottom of page and click on apply. Hey Presto done.
For some reason clicking on the rename album tab in properties doesn't label album. Hope this helps. Still can't find those photos?? what and i doing wrong? go to photo albums-users pics-page 14. is this right?

If you look at the endview youll see that there are tryangle gussets ,total of 8 per plate, these are welded from the top plate to the virtical, so ties it all together. Sorry i should do a plan view which would answer these questions. ve named the album ( U Bolts)

Howdy Kevin
Any idea whether they will fit a 60 series? I have moved the shocks in the rear but am running the factory mounts in the front, do these plates retain the same shock position? Could you build the rear plates without shock mounts (would this change the price?) Im actually interested in moving the front shock mounts a little as well, since I have adjustable shocks and the adjustment knob currently interferes with the sway bar on my truck, would you be able to do this? Id need to have a good look to see if there is an appropriate relocation point , but'd be great to know it could be done...

Here are the full drawings to see if they are OK for your 60s.
Just remember that you can-not do any welding, other than the gussetts, so the main plate needs to be machine bent.

It was covering the price of the pressing, from my local engineering shop, people might think they would be getting a real good deal at $25.00

Im keen for a set for the front, if we can ascertain whether 60s run the smae plates as the 70s (the spring packs are the same height/width), and whether or not we can change where the bottom shock mounts mount. I'll have a good look tomorrow to see how much the mounts would have to move for the adjusters to clear the swaybar, if worst comes to worst maybe just give me the mounts unattached and I'll sort out where they go...

I'm pretty certain the front is the same. But on the 60 they have a (not sure what its called so i'll use the highly technical term) thingy that goes around the rear spring. The U Bolts are slightly wider which would change the hole locations on the plates. You may need to alter the "wing width" to accomodate this. Would pay to check this as i'm not 100% sure, but certainly something to watch out for

Bear in mind that the 70s U Bolts on the front go east/west, so they need to be splayed about 5degrees on each side.to fit the holes in the plate.
This is why there are A & B Plates. A for the front, B for the rear.

The 40s U Bolts go north/south so both sets are B

If I am correct in assuming what 'east to west' is, the 60 series U-bolts on the front are the same as the 70 series.
To make sure we havent got our wires crossed here is a pic of the front of my truck
Image

I am actually second guessing myself on whether this is the way I want to go now since I am also weighing up whether to go the spring over route instead.

If these spring plates will fit in the front of my truck and we can mod the shock mount to fit my adjustable ranchos (at this stage I think simply making it extend out a little further might be sufficient to clear the adjuster nob), then I will probably go with these in the front. My plan would then be to do a U-bolt flip in the rear, and new superior drop shackles all round to give me flex approaching that of (or exceeding) SOA...
