Hijack during off roading! need help
Re: Hijack during off roading! need help
The prolonged comments and opinions here probably won't be helping the guys if they are pursuing legal action so unless someone has something new to add maybe refrain from attacking the parties involved, even if they deserve it??
The content could be used in court.
I dunno, I think people all are thinking the same in regard to this incident and it has been stated in numerous ways already.
The only other thing that might help this could be to have a forum vote for or against the actions of the guys recovering so it lays it out straight for all to see the apparent disapproval or not (ha).
Zero or the other guy should state what they plan to do, if anything.....

I thought about asking to lock it also but I'd want the people to be able to post the results of whatever action if any they are taking. Be a good reference to anyone else thinking of trying it on with a stuck wheeler.
Re: Hijack during off roading! need help
Appreciate for all the suggestions for all your time on this topic for all you guys here.
We will keep wheeling with you guys!
We will consider every suggestion and make a decision later.
In my option:
They did lots of effort for pulling out our trucks. We will pay the fair price for what they have done.
About extortion and blackmail, if they can guarantee it won't happen on others, we reserve the right to legal action
For the club,we just wanna a statement based on the truth and an apology.

I would be too. I'd be looking for scalps. However there is a way to do things (Posse up, bitch online etc) then theres the legally correct way. Just wouldn't want anything jeopardised by further comments on here.

Zero4 and friends, on behalf of the Kiwi 4WD community I would like to apologise to you for the way you have been treated, believe me this is not the Kiwi way. You attempted a track that you should have had at least 3---4 well set up vehicles to do and have been caught out you asked for help and received it for which you where prepared to pay a fair price , up to now is the Kiwi way. From here on it went WRONG. All through this thread you have still thanked those that gave up their time and rescued your vehicles and your last post has stated that you are prepared to let things go for the sake of moving on and have asked for an assurance that it won't happen again and an apology from those involved==== now you have already embraced the KIWI WAY. I believe that this thread has now served it's purpose and think it should be left to those involved to bring it to a conclusion that will enable all parties to learn from their mistakes and

Re: Hijack during off roading! need help
Well its been quite sometime since I have viewed this site but after several received phone calls and some out of left field public commentary from the general joe public passing comment to me regarding there concerns with what has happened in this event I needed to have a read for myself....I have only read the first and last few pages and thats enough for me.
I will reserve my comments from public view as I believe all aspects have been commented on.
But to let all parties know an individual can hire a 10-20 ton excavator from as little as $4-6000 PER MONTH. This size machine would be an absolute over kill, obviously smaller the machine the cheaper and keep in mind how much work could be carried out within the month!! not that we would want to clean that particular part of the track up!
Quite an embarrassment to admit I am part of the 4x4 community if and when we get branded with the same brush.
Hang your head in shame!!
Regards and good luck to the victims!

Re: Hijack during off roading! need help
is this the same thompsons track over the kaimais i went over with a mate about 5 or 6 years ago when i used to live up north?
72 swb series 3 landrover + izusu mu .... didnt even really get "stuck" ...
at least nothing a bit of shovel and tow couldnt solve easily..
maybe the track was better back then?

awesome... might have to go have a look sometime

but seriously whoever it was that suggested a chopper airlift them out, get real banana peel - even an iroquios can only JUST lift 1000kg's ... what chopper exists that could apply at least 5-6 tons of lift to squelch it out of a mud bog I dont know . . . . I've seen 20 ton diggers snap logging chains trying to lift 4wd's out of mud bogs, dont underestimate the mud suction eh

you may have driven to the top and back but you certianly wouldnt have done the katikat side without getting "stuck"
unless it was 15-20 years ago

like people saying they have "done" waitawheta when really they just did the access track to the start of the loop...
or maratoto wires when really they just made it up to the camp and went back
i remember my first ever trip over thomos which would have been 15yr ago and there was winching and digging done then to get there and back... ahh the good old days

BIG difference

damn good pics. You seem to have made a good attempt at it..
Dont follow me. i'll get stuck and need a tow..
Re: Hijack during off roading! need help

The query was what chopper exists, not whats present in NZ too.
Re: Hijack during off roading! need help
I was meaning in nz - it would cost millions to get one of those skycrane/chinook things transported over here....
but even WITH 9 ton of lift, thats still gonna struggle lifting a 2~2.5 ton truck straight up out of a mud bog ?!?
when ive seen 20 ton diggers struggling with the same task - that would have to be one hell of a pilot to do that without crashing . . .
so which heli outfit in nz is this that would seriously consider seriously risking their lives and a bzillion dollar chopper for less than 8 grand?
as for crossing thomsons track 5 or 6 years ago - yeah im pretty sure we made it right through, we arrived at the beach and continued up to coromandel from there....
plenty of shovel fun and winching/towing i wouldnt deny that, but neither of us got stuck enough to warrant assistance....
this is where land rovers do their business though - so long as you have a shovel, saw, jack, tools, and dont end up on your roof - you will get there
the army use/d them for precisely that reason...
hell I've seen an old fella winch his landrover out of a bog buried in thick mud upto the chassis, multiple lengths of number 8 wire and strainers
good old kiwi ingenuity...
something the rescuers in this $8k situation were lacking I think..

Re: Hijack during off roading! need help
I was gonna say something bout that earlier, its a nice short truck with a good winch by the looks of the bulldozing its doing
cant say much for the shiny tho, cant see it very well...
did you have a shovel or any other recovery tools besides a winch?
didn't happen to get a pic of where it was recovered from?
doesn't look like your in any major trouble in those pics....

If ya look carefully in the third pic, there is a shovel applied to the ground in what is called "the council position"
And in a different earlier pic, our young visiting friends were utilizing a hi-lift jack
