Having I think exhausted all other possibilities as to the source of my shudders at takeoff and a slight rough drivetrain sound throughout, I think I'm looking for a new gearbox.
88 2.4D hilux currently has I think a G52, but I'm keen to go for the R151 to make sure I've got something stronger for when I get round to uping the ante under the hood.
If you know what's involved in swapping over I'd be interested to hear. I've heard varied stories from having to shift the x-member back and shorten a driveshaft through to it being a straight bolt-up with the exception of some electronic complications.
This is somewhat price dependant. Not too sure what these are going for, but having already swapped my gearbox once I may opt for the rebuild of one of my g or w52s (not sure which) instead.

Have a R150 with a busted transfer (started making graunching noises and not unlocking), could sell it to you cheap, and if it dont work/fit just flick it on? then hunt a new transfer ?
Complete minus shifter. one of the non electric ones too

Did you check the clutch when you had gearbox out?
slipping clutch plate could give you the shuddering symptoms when under load

Sorry for taking so long to get back - been working on house, fixing another hilux and trying to get some fishing in.
T-Boon - cheers, my only worry with this option is that I'll have just as much trouble finding the transfercase as I would a combo. Will keep it in mind though and if I can't find one complete, I'll get in touch.
Smurf - yeah. Changed the clutch and machined before reassembly and no change to problem. Given that the clutch doesn't slip at all, I'm fairly confident that's not it. I can make it shudder by dropping my speed right down as well as when letting out clutch.

I just picked up an 85 range rover for a work wagon last month, it also has a shudder as you take off, it is freeplay in the drivetrain, in particular a lot of freeplay in the diffheads.
Put your transfer case in neutral and see how much (rotational) movement you can get out of your rear driveshaft,

Yeah, there's freeplay in the diff, but had it reconditioned by steelie gears, so not more than there should be. And not axial play. Seems like there is too much on the transfer
