They run in a series setup , if the passenger side horn is blown the drivers side won't work.
I chased tail on mine for weeks untill I plugged an after market air horn on to the passenger side and away it went.

Check that it is earthed properly.

Thier is a relay up under the dash somewhere, will have alook at the fsm later and let you know the location.
When you press the horn you should get 12v at the horn plug. And be able to hear the relay clicking under the dash.
12v can be directly conected to the horn to check if It is blown or jammed up

I would be closely inspecting the column though as the horn stopped after you played with It

What he said ... If it worked fine until you did work on the column and then it stopped that will be where your problem will be.
It is very unlikely that the relay or the horns will have suddenly failed at the same time as you did work on the column.
most horn switches are a single wire that is earthed when the button is pressed. trace the horn wire on the column and earth it and the horn should work ( some require the key to be on ) As "bruntonjm" the actual switch contact carbons up, or wears down so it does not touch at all.
There is no mechanical problem so difficult that it cannot be solved by brute strength and ignorance.
