Surge Tanks

Whos running a surge tank in there 4x4? Putting a 1uz in my L/C and mate doing the work for me said I should probably put a Fuel Surge Tank in, makes sense but just wondering who else is running one in there 4x4? Also what Fuel pump would you recommend for 1uz? VL commodore seems to be popular.

You will also need a 2nd fuel pump to lift it to the surge tank.

Other options 4 fuel pumps:

Walbro (im unsure of item#)
Bosch 440 (good pumps but very noisey)

I had a custom tank made for my 1uz hilux, I had the surge tank incorporated into a corner of the main tank. low pressure pump fills the surge then high pressure internal pump sends fuel to engine then return back to surge tank. The surge tank has 2 small holes in the top partitions that return fuel to the main tank. System seems to work well so far.

My lux with a 1uz runs a factory tank and pump from a 130 series Surf that had the injected 3Y-E, Its running a G4 Link ecu so has more power than a factory 1uz and the factory pump still provides ample fuel.

Its common to just find a complete tank from a 130 V6 surf and use that, which is probally what my tank and pump is anyway as i dont think Toyota would have a diff set-up in the 3y-e surf compared to the 3.0v6 surf eh

Theres no need to piss around with larger flow pumps or surge tanks unless its a competition truck as for a general club truck the factory surf pumps are fine. (and cheap)

Thanks for the Pics Lolyf but Im going to use the factory tank and just mount the surge tank under deck or bonnet, Just dont know if I actually need one or not. Not going to get too serious offroad, Found out today can get a Holden external fuel pump New for $200+ thought thats not too bad. Oh and I know Ill need a Low Pressure pump too but there cheap enough.

Lexlux used to have the same set as you are looking at (lj71 with 1uz) he used factory tank with low pressure lift pump (noisy facet one) with a custom surge tank under the bonnet. the surge tank used a skyline intank pump, similar to my hi pressure system.

I have seen people just using a vl pump straight of the factory tank but i don't think it's a great way to do it as they like to push fuel not suck it.

It would work that way as long as the pump is lower than your tank, not very practical under a 4x4

Can you modify your tank to take a factory hi pressure pump? as haydgq says the factory way works very well. I would have done this (130 series tank) in mine, but with my suspension the factory tank wouldn't fit. Plus having it in the tray protects it from offroad damage.

I see Cartune will modify a factory diesel setup by mounting a intank pump on the bottom of your factory pickup pipe and running the wires out the top, also tought about getting a v6surfs intank pump and seeing if itll fit staright into my tank.

another option if getting a tank made is to use Walbro pickups in each corner of the tank and then you only need high pressure pump. They are $26 US and I wish I could find someone in NZ that stocks them. They have a filter that closes when dry so no worries with surge.

I ran a surge tank in my old truck and used factoy efi pump to feed it then Bosch 044 for the main pump. (And yes they are loud!) The surge tank was on the deck above the main tank with return from reg to surge tank and overflow from surge back to main tank. If running a surge tank don't forget a second filter ie one for each pump.

I run a surge tank on my uz as well, used a high flow low pressure pump from main tank to surge then a 044 bosch to the engine, works mint
