minor electrical issue

Post by muskie »

fitted a new cd player in my daily 24v safari yesterday. i have HAD to take a permanent live straight from the passengers battery, i know this is not ideal and i want to change it but for some reason the permanent live in the car seems to pulse and turn the cd player on and off, also couldnt find an earth wire so had to go direct earth to body.... any clues as to why and how to fix?? the old 18 year old radio held its memory ok. thanks.

Did the 18 year old radio hold its memory because it had dials and a little stick pointing at the freq??

Assuming the radio ain't on the fritz
Sounds like a bad earth to me unless you have a resetable breaker somewhere and are drawing too much which mine does?? Before i used an equaliser, I wired mine into some random wire that had 12v feed on the acc circuit and it worked fine. Just needed to make sure it had a good return. (I bolted mine to the dash frame) If you use a meter you can test between a known good earth and something your questioning to see what the resistance is like. Check the feed with a meter while your at it to see whats going on.

The 12V in a 24V safari is crap! Will only push out around 5 amps at its best!! Most radios need around 8 amps at full volume and your 12V is being shared with some other 12V electrics in the truck.

Best to do:

1: If its just the radio you want to power, and not a lot else get your self a 24V to 12V 15Amp reducer ( I've got one for sale if you want, PM me) or just see TM.

2: If you thinking of wanting extra 12V accessories then i would set up a stand lone 12V system. A lot of people on hear have done some good and different set ups, pending on what you want it for.

If you want more info on stand lone system just ask :-)

Mine draws more than 5 amps and its sweet, runs a decent cd player, 2 6x9's and a PRS on top of the factory bits and pieces easy as.

Sweet ... you must have a better one than I've got .... I had the same problem as muskie, the CD player just blinked on and off, until I gave it some decent power and she was off .... I solved by getting a reducer ... then the 12V system when in and now that's just history ...

thanks for the replys, i did a bit of research on other forums and it looks like the standard reducer does have issues (majority) and some experience no problems whatsoever.. looks like a new reducer, some locally on tm for 39 bucks. thanks again.

Yeah I had the same issue. Hooked the new CD to the power for the old radio and it went but you could barely hear it. Thought the speakers or player was poked but put an 8amp dedictaed reducer in and it was fine.
