fuel cells/ or re-locating fuel tanls

Post by J_Dub »

Whats the go with fuel cells?
What rules and stuff are there for having 1 on a road legal truck?

One thing I hate with the Hiluxes is the fuel tank sitting so low and hard to one side, I have plenty of deck space so wonderin how easy or realistic it is to relocate the fuel tank????

If i was, I would mount it directly behind the bulkhead on the deck, and move the spare tyre back against the back end of the truck, would be benificial having more weight over the axle too rather than in front to 1 side

cert threshold is real low with fuel systems move it or replace it with a different unit and its cert
As far as cert placing it on the deck behind the cab is all good, as for cell's all good so long as its thick enough gauge
1.6mm for alloy 1mm for stanless and 1.2 for electro galv steel

does the divider or bulkhead seperating cabin from deck have to be steel? or is that irrelevant? so long as the right guage materials are used as you stated?

There is nothing I can find about bulkhead material all comments work along the line that no fuel can get into the passanger compartment when filling and the tank has some method to stop fuel escaping in a roll over (non return valve on breather and sealing cap)
I've been through all this as my zuk will have the new tank mounted behind the seats, inside the cab  the filler is still going to be outside but to aid gaining cert I'm making a recess into the floor with an open drain to the outside and the tank will have a bolt on sheet metal cover

That's hilarious when you consider that the old military Landies had the filler under the passenger seat!!! Quality bit of design eh?

Nice 1, cheers for the info..
Im liking the idea more and more, and above all the other positives of doing this, it cleans up the underside and would make it a shit load easier to clean..
Could a standard fuel tank be mounted there or are they not up to spec to be deck mounted? As, maybe I could find a factory tank with an inbuilt pump which I need for the 3.8 comy donk

The more you get into mod'ing cars the more you find things like that  oh and trying the "but its like that in the...." just don't wash

J_Dub as for fitting a factory tank from something else, talk to your local cert guy, depending on your choice..I'd expect him to be happier with that than an aftermarket fuel cell
Just one suggestion, the commy tank has no internal baffles, it does have a swirl pot that the pump sits in tho but this is at low levels (under half) isn't going to hold much fuel on a steep climb or sideling.... you may need an external surge tank
