Scotsman new to NZ

Post by dotjohnny »

Hi guys, just new to the forum and to New Zealand, me and the good lady came over from the UK. I’m from Scotland and the good lady is from NZ. I’m in Christchurch and just got myself a 1993 Landcruiser 80. The first thing I would like to get is a set of 275/70/16 A/T for it. Are the BFG worth the $$$$ is $1500 fitted a good price or can you get them cheaper. Also where can you get a passenger side mirror glass for it? I have been searching the net but no joy. Priced it from Toyota and they want $150 for the glass that’s just daylight robbery. You can buy them in the US for $12..... yes $12 but I can’t seem to get anyone to send it over.
Cheers John

Fark, Wullie, TWO of you. I can hear the skirl of the pipes and see kilts flying etc.

I broke a side mirror in my wee truck, and the local glazier cut and fitted a new glass while I waited. $25 or so was not too bad considering new parts.

Dunno your Pom history too well do you?

When push came to shove, at a very important time, the Welsh fkt off and hid. Us scots descended peoples dont forget these things quickly, you know! If the Welsh had stuck to their word, them bloody Normans wouldn't have stood a chance!

Welcome dotjohnny.
Christchurch .... the place to be :!: ,

Can't help you with your mirror problem, but I would do some searching on this forum about your choice of tyres ... a lot of info here.

My opinion .... BFG aren't worth the money ... I've had 2 BFG tyres with side impact damage that didn't stand up to a WOF (MOT)... had to bin them with over 25% tread :x ... I now run Maxxis Bighorn which so far have been great. Done 25'000 KM so far and only 1/3 into the tread. Low on road noise and they have been great for river work, which no doubt you been doing a lot of ... also they are far cheaper than BFG!!

Also advise you join a club if you haven't already, quite a few in Christchurch ... you be able to get on land that without the club you wouldn't be able too.

Have fun mud flicking

Mirror get one cut as said.

Just put bfg a/t on my lwb safari. 275/70/16's $430 each. the bfg a/t was the only tread pattern I liked as very deep and wide grooves on road tread pattern so would be quiet and good on the road but still chunky enough to get me and trailer with offroad truck on to where it needed to get to play. so far the mud and river work they have done they have impressed me for an a/t
On road they are quiet and smooth. part of the justification for the price is the reputation to get 80000 k from a set. unfortunately I have discovered that to get those sort of road miles the rubber is a very hard compound so on road grip is not as good as it should be. gonna catch me out in the wet one day Im sure. gonna have to live with that. I should say its not that bad but I have noticed it compared to the previous firestone rmt.
wouldnt buy them again. Also have have found out that if you dont get the 80k done fast enough the cases will crack due to rubber hardening over time. so you end up with a tyre with lots of tread but splits in the sides apparently.
Also have Bfg m/t on a pajero(came with them) that I absolutly hate and they wont wear out so I can replace them.dangerous on road and hopeless in the mud too. decided it was because they are old and the rubber had gone hard. now after having the new a/ts I know its because they were hard rubber to begin with. So in conclusion Im done with bfg. but as they wont wear out Im going to have them for a long time yet. Not a lot off options in the 275/ 16s was another reason I got them

Arrived March '84 (after escaping a shocker of a Winter), have gone back a couple of times for funerals but not not for at least a decade now I think. Great wee country we have here!

Buckfast now that is something I have not heard for a while.. Never seen it here but there is something similar I had a few (too many) times as a student called Purple Death - not seen that on the shelves for a while either but a quick Google finds http://www.sapich.co.nz/purpledeath.html

Code: Select all

An unusual "Rough-as-Guts" aperitif that has the distinctive bouquet of horse-shit and old tram tickets. it is best drunk with teeth clenched to avoid foreign bodies. Connoisseurs often drink this strange brew in conjunction with other beverages which complement, or mask, the delicate flavour of Purple Death.

Worth a sample if you find some.

There is a man called Michael Frase Milne down your way who owns Whisky Galore (and aside from that is a bloody nice man), he may be able to import some in - grab a couple of bottles for me too :)

I've got 4 at home but only willing to share not sell

If you find some let me know as I haven't seen liquid speed for sale anywhere in NZ.

We have Barry's tea bags and Hula Hoops in the Supermarkets now so are heading in the right direction.

Hey dude you can buy PD straight off the website im pretty sure. They still sell it at the piss shops in West Auckland so maybe if they dont sell it via the website you could ring some shops up here and get it sent down.

Oh and welcome dotJ, wish i could claim myself to be a true scotsman but the family left Fife 3 generations ago I will definitely be going over to visit some day, it looks amazing.

Tried a bunch of westy piss shops recently and no one had purple death, then realised it was made 5minutes up the road  So went and got it from the winery

LoL Taz we have to meet up, no need to sell me the stuff if you are going to share  I will bring the tennents and Jack Daniels .
Uwshho Fife is not that far from my old home town in Scotland.
It sounds as if I will have to give the PD a try.
