Oil Pressure Gauge - What's it good for?!

Post by gav »

Sorry - complete newbie question...

My 1992 Nissan Safari has an oil pressure gauge (kg/cm2) - what's this useful for and what should I be looking for that might indicate there's a potential problem somewhere?

Cheers,
Gav :)

Your oil pressure in your engine. Peace of mind knowing you have oil running through your motor. It should sit about halfway when running, a little lower at idle, if it increases above that something is wrong. It is also of assistance in knowing oil is being picked up and sent through the motor when truck is on steep angles for long periods ie Winching up or down steep long slopes, truck on angle sidways for long time.

Also, as an engine wears and gets older the oil pressure slowly drops. So a pressure gauge over a long time can tell you the condition of the main, big end and cam bearings.
It should sit about halfway when running

Mine never seems to get above 1/3 of the way up the gauge

Could be getting a little tired, I'm thinking it has a few K's on it.
Cheers,
I keep looking for the loose nut behind the wheel, but I can't find it!!

My engine compressionn was within 3% of manfactures specs, hence I think halfway is were it should sit.
