Re: 1kzte surf getting a bit hot
Yeah the main point of my Previous post was that the factory gauge is terrible and how hot does the engine have to get before Toyota thought they should show the driver.
Ive had mine to 105 degrees and I wouldve thought the factory gauge should have moved by then.
What scares me a little is that in the first year i had the Surf I had the factory temp gauge moving a few times. Nothing huge but the needle went to the right of the symbol. But still how hot was it on those occasions. Had to be over 105
And I really would like to get around to fitting an EGT gauge.
But once again what is the max temp it can run at when towing, hill climbing etc.
EGT is def the best and fastest indicator of engine heat. Perfomance engine tuners dont use them for nothing
But I think what most of use are trying to do is get the cooling system to work at its best so we can have the most power for longer.
Damn u turbo diesel and your heat

Re: 1kzte surf getting a bit hot
Yeah I'd love to know if anyone has had any luck with the cooling system without driving it snail pace up hills. I've done the radiator, external trans cooler, new Toyota thermostat, fresh coolant, fan seems to be sweet and yet on the weekend I still managed to get above half way on the stock temp gauge going up the hills in coromandel
so I'm getting a lil frustrated with the damn thing. I'm freeing up the exhaust this weekend with removing the muffler etc. I guess next step would be trying to keep intake temps down via intercooler

Re: 1kzte surf getting a bit hot
Mine has stable temperature , doesn't go above 90 even when I trash it up big hills , Or play in the deep sand
Trick is the right revs and not trying to accelerate while hill climbing.
76deg prado thermostat and a proper aftermarket temp guage.
Pyro to be fitted soon for piece of mind while towing

Re: 1kzte surf getting a bit hot
Have just been over the cooling system in my 1kz surf with the same problems (new head, water pump, prado themostat, full flush, new custom ali radiator, trans cooler etc). And still getting hot when towing or up hills could'nt keep it under 100 when going up a hill. Fixed it finally by adding about 20ml of viscous oil to the hub (it looked/felt fine when checking it) and now going up the same hill I can't get it over 80 pushing it is hard as I can. I can hear the fan kick in which I could'nt before their isnt really anyway to test them so I gave it a go and so happy now. Have now been told by a toyota tech that when the engine has had a cook up you should replace/reoil the hub they relie so much on the fan to suck the air there is no air flow to the radiator with everything in front of it, it just gets pushed around the side of the truck.

This is exactly the reply that makes my day! Where did you buy the viscous oil from? I'm very keen to do this!
Re: 1kzte surf getting a bit hot
BNT was about $20 for a 50ml tube or toyota was about $45 for a 18ml tube. I use the BNT one worked great.
Re: 1kzte surf getting a bit hot
A new viscous hub from toyota was $390+ trade so I did'nt go that way.
Re: 1kzte surf getting a bit hot
Sweet, myt grab some tomrw on smoko. So you just opened the hub up n filled it up and away she went?
Re: 1kzte surf getting a bit hot
Thats it, you will need a impact driver to undo the screws on the hub.

Awsum I'll take the hub off this weekend and take into work next week unless the work dies down a bit this week :/. Cheers dude hopfilly this will work or at least help the issue

Re: 1kzte surf getting a bit hot
And im gonna try some snake-oil called EvapoRust Cooling System Flush.
Theres a bit of scale on the old hoses and pump parts i removed so maybe its insulating the metal bits from the coolant. Some Penrite Sin coolant will be next after that.
Will let you know. Its only money after all.........aaahhhh!

Re: 1kzte surf getting a bit hot
Hey guys, well I ripped out the viscous unit and threw in a whole lot of fresh oil, she roars now haha and I havnt bn able to get it hot since then, I've given it death up some pretty steep hills in the mid afternoon heat after a long drive and it just sat on normal temp great help! If anyone has issues still getting hot after doing the radiator etc try re filling your viscous unit made such a huge change!
Re: 1kzte surf getting a bit hot
hey karl0z, when u said ur truck now sat on normal temp are u basing it on the factory gauge or after market gauge.. if its after market temp wat readings are u getting gfoing up a long hill

Based on the stock gauge, used to sit on half exactly and the creep a lil each way up decent hills which was useless lol! But this weekend I'm hitting the dunes so I'll give u a reading from my aftermarket gauge

Re: 1kzte surf getting a bit hot
Took it out on Sunday dude, gave it absolute arseholes and it sat up to 90degrees that's as high as she got so I'm very very very happy with it now so rip out the viscous unit and re oil it the guy who told me that is a legend!

Yeah me and other people have mentioned to re-oil the viscous many times in this thread.
Dont know y people over look this as is possibly the cheapest thing to do.
Glad u had success. Just make sure u can hear it come in and out as u dont want it in all the time as will be using extra fuel
Before you repaired it did you notice if it roared a bit on start up?
It should now

Yeah cuz of you mentioning to do it is the reason I did it
