pa 80series front diff keeps leaking at ball seals

Post by crazyclark31 »

Hi all. as the title says . the old man has got an 80 series that keeps leaking diff oil out the ball seals. :x As in it drips onto the wheels when stationary
He has replaced the wheel bearings, king pin bearings and all of the seals. Has even put a tighter seal on the left as it was(is) the worst.
We thought the seals might have been put in the wrong way(inside out)?
The ball surfaces are in good nick.no roughness at all.
Dont know if would affect it at all but has a 3inch lift to.
Any ideas would be great

my guess is the brass sleeve shim thingy in the hub is worn and allowing the cv and half shaft to move/ rotate sideways wearing the seal out, second idea is that the half shaft is slightly bent more likely the first idea thu the brass thingy is available as a seperate peice

3 inch lift should be of no issue

did you replace the internal axle seals in the housing itself?

so if its leakin diff oil out of the knuckles thru the wiper seals, its gettin past a fair bit of stuff.

replace internal axle seal in housing, tap filler bolt on knuckle and tap in a grease nipple, fill with grease.

sorted.

might want to check that the diff breather isn't blocked and causing the housing to pressurise.

COuld also be worn where the inner seal runs on the half shaft, my spare patrol axles are very worn there an would leak pretty bad if used (thats why theyre spares) also check the breather an axle bush as someone else said.
Make sure the diff oil isnt over full too

hi all
Yep all the seal have been replaced in the front diff.
Will look into the brass shim(cheers for the tm link :) ) and the breather hose.
Will tell him to get the shafts checked for wear next time axles are out. Truck has done bout 300,000km so could be that to
