Suspension Upgrade on a Surf - advice needed

Post by pouw »

Hi all

After some advice on my suspension upgrade for my 1995 Toyota Surf - LN130 model.

My understanding is that I have shock and torsion bars at the front, shocks and springs at the rear.

I am after a 2" lift with a view to better touring/on road handling and better basic offroad handling. The vehicle is predominantly used onroad and has the original spec suspension, albeit replaced relatively recently. It wont be doing the Thompson Track but might be doing the Akatarawas as far as the turnaround point.

Here are my choices, both include replacement shocks, springs, torsion bars and a steering dampener:
EFS - Price of parts = $1870.00
ARB/Old Man Emu = $2150.00

Installation is the same cost regardless of the above so not a factor here.

What I want to know is which of the two you guys consider better, but I have some criteria:
1. I dont mind opinions on either of the above if you have actually used them.
2. If you suggest that one is better then the other, let me know why? Would prefer it if you have used both if this is the case, rather then "ARB is better because I have it in my truck and its just better"
3. Very interested to hear from other Surf owners who have either of the above.

If anyone knows of an equivalent but cheaper option to the above, happy to hear about it, especially you dealers out there :)

Many thanks guys.

Cheers

I have the ARB/ OME setup on my kzn130 surf
Done a hard 50k with no issues.
Front torsions made the biggest Difference compared to other surfs I've been in . Not bouncy or hard in the front .
Rear shocks limit flex at little but the setup is for road handling.

im the same as ubz,got OME in mine, been 4 yrs now, only around 20thousand kms tho as it spends most of its life in the garage being fixed  ,but yeh, torsions did make a massive difference, ive also had mine 2-3 foot in the air on multiple occasions as well as front end 4foot in the air and still holds up strong, also now have a 350 chevy so easily double my original motor weight and it still drives mint
1990 surf 350 chevy jacked up and currently under construction again

All ive done in my surf is change the springs
My factory electric adjustable shocks work fine .dont make the mistake of putting in shicks that are too hard ..it will make it ride like crap & eventually the mounts will crack & break
I recently replaced my steering dampner but only cause it was leaking.
You wont gain anything by replacing the torsion bars ( you have a fixed amount of travel new bars wont change that )
With the money youve saved buy yourself so recovery gear or maybe a waeco fridge ...something ive got & love ...you cant beat real cold beers on a hot day.

True you won't gian any more travel , but the difference in ride quality is massive
My surf with only 110k used to get a bad front end bounce going on the open road when you went over consecutive bumps. Put new shocks in and it got better a little , fitted new torsions and the problem went away.

The other thing I've done that made I big difference in ride , was to set the front ride height and camber with 4 tires in the back.
Means when empty the rear sits up , but when loaded it sits flat and the steering Dosent go all light.

Exactly why I am thinking of replacing the torsion bars - vehicle has an awful ride, and leans down toward the passenger side. Given this is going to be my long term tourer, and occasional offroader, I figure - DO IT ONCE, DO IT ALL, DO IT RIGHT

I already have all the recovery gear from past trucks, strops, d shackles, compressor etc and have a winch and snorkel on the truck.

Basically all is there and ready to go, just the crap ride quality to remedy :)
