Boogers build thread

Post by Nivapulledout »

Image
booger before any mods apart from 30" half worn BFGs

Right so I have finally gotten around to resizing all my build pics and so will start my build thread on ORE.

My little green ball of snot(booger) had done me proud as a cheep commuter wagon and great for camping in remote places with the mrs however Two years ago I got a winch and needed to fab a bumper to mount it to. unfortunately the bug caught and now have modified alot of things. it has been one and a half years so far( I do live overseas so only really 8 weeks of actual work) to get this far. I have only added a few comments so sorry about the brief description, I am sure most of you will get the idea though. and if anyone wants more of a description about something just ask :D

Image
Seats were on the list and I happend to have some BMW E36 coupe seats spare. no more wobbly uncomfortable seats.

Image
fully height adjustable. wicked.

Image
make a round bumper hole square.

Image
give it some extra bracing.

Image

Image
all painted up waiting for winch fitting.

Image

Image

Image
out with the old engine

Image
plan

Image
a week part on the Nivas is the alloy front diff which is also mounted to the engine so gets twisted with the engine. To solve both problems I plan to turn a spare rear steel axle into a steel front diff that is mounted to the front crossmember.

Image
making a jig off the original.

Image
first line up

Image
alot of grinding needs to be doin to the pumpkin as the output flange and bearing sit so close on the short side.

Image
the step is for the bearing to sit in, it is a real close call.

Image
all welded up looks good.

Image
mounts made

Image
fitted to the front crossmember

Image

Image
the air lockers (from greece) and 4.7 gears(from germany) fitted ready for installation :D :D It is really hard to find aftermarket parts for ladas. I also have a Russian torsen/quaif type LSD as a spare.

Image
wedges for the front spring base, this is what we lada guys call a Hoodoo Mk I after the guy(Hoodoo) that first did this mod.( he has joined ORE now) the MK II just uses spacer rings on the springs but although easier to fit tent to make the spring bend more. the wedges straighten the spring up .

Image
all painted

Image
new progressive front springs from Russia

Image
needed some extra weight to compress the springs he he

Image
cant be calling these progressive any more huh

Image
got progressive springs for the rear as well as adding a spacer. the hoodoo lift gives approximatly 2" of lift. :D

Image
the old rear top spring seat and the new lifted one.(From Russia)

now I dont like the rear drums on the Niva as the forever need adjusting. so decided to retrofit disks.

Image
rear axle flange machined to take a Niva front disk.

Image
I used citreon ZX calipers just cause I was at the citreon wrecker for some engine parts, he also gave me the mounts. so I welded them on.

Image
Looks Great does it not!!! :D

Image

Image Custom handbrake cable fitted nice, wasnt cheap though!!!

Trial fitting the Peugeot 1.9 TD

Image
because the diff sits right under the sump I have to graft the lada sump onto the pug sump. bit of a bugger

Image
hard to weld them sumps. all the oil impregnation so get lots of pinholes. also need to screw to a board to stop warpage.

Image
oil pump pickup now fouls the new sump. going to be a tight fit.

Image
cut off the pickup

Image
Press in some copper fittings

Image
a couple of 90s and some heavy brassing to make sure it does not crack or break off.

Image

Image
the difference between the lada flywheel position and the pug is obvious a flywheel spacer will be needed.

Image
the spacer allowed me to house the lada spigot bearing as well which solved that problem.

Image
made up my own adapter plate with a bit of dead reckoning.

Image
Cut the Lada gearbox to accept the pug starter mount I had cut off.

Image
Ready for welding, I kept the starter pattern on the adaptor plate so that I could use it for alighnment . some more calculations to get the distance correct. cut spacers that length and bolt it all up.

Image
welded with a minispool gun on my mig. not so tidy but great penetration. I then cut the starter pattern out of the adaptor plate.

Image
the Pug flywheel was slightly bigger than the lada one so needed a bit of a grind inside the bell housing to get it all to fit.

Image
because the starter now sits back further the block needed a bit of a grind as well to allow it to fit.

Image
the lada friction disk fitted the pug Non turbo clutch plate so I grabbed a non turbo flywheel from a wrecker and a new pug pressure plate.
edit: once I got it all together and engine running I could not get the clutch to disengage!!!!! I think this could be because of the two different components, I have now found out from someone else in the uk that I had copied the idea off that he actually used a complete lada clutch assm as it bolts on ok to the pug flywheel. I am yet to confirm this but when I get home will need to rip out the engine and try and see if a complet lada clutch fixes the problem.
Edit: it is now confirmed, if doing this mod Use the complete lada clutch. as it was the pug pressure plate not compatible with the lada friction disk thickness.

the first offering up.

Image
kept the lada splash guard with a bit of modification

Image
Starter bolted up nice and engaged when a bit of juice was applied. must have got those measurements correct.

Image
made a new mount for the mitsi 90amp alternator, keep it high up and out of the mud, needed the mitsi as it has a vacuum pump on the back. the pug vacuum pump bolted on the back of the cam but this fowled the firewall.

Image
the diesel needs a return line to tank so grabbed the fuel line off my wreck and ran that next to the suction line. easy no bending required.

Image
all plumbed in

Image
in she goes, Ugly bastard that :D

Image
modified the mounts

modified this so the vacuum pump can drain into it.

should not be overheating with these puppies :)

the start up vid, started first time after a crank with no fuel to get oil pressure. happy chappy.

I am now back overseas so wont be any progression for a while unfortunatly.

I still need to pull the engine and gearbox again as the clutch is not engaging for some reason!! hope I have not stuffed something up.

Mods still to come.

box section sills
virtual lift
fab rear bumper and tow mount
fit rock crawler gearbox 3:1 ratio
roll cage
on board air using sanden pump.
Snorkle

Ooh, I could organise some sorta get-together at my Dad's farm, in Kaiwaka. (It has mud, bogs, hills, creeks...)

Also, you have done pretty much everything I want for the Fiva. Oh well, if all goes to plan, i will be making awesome ad's for all to see, and getting piles of money

I'm glad you chose to share this build with us :D

cheers Rokhound, there was many a time I would be sitting there head in hands going"how the hell am I going to get around this" but you always find a way. normally just means more work/money than you planned.
I am Enjoying doing up the Niva cause it is something different to what people have. I like the jokes and banter. and I think it looks cool. Plus the value factor of beating people in a lada and seeing their faces he he.

SP450andLE your dads farm sounds like a blast. might have to take you up on that offer. keep working at the Fiva and you will get there mate. at least you have time to work on it.

Oh so true

And yeah, the Fiva will be ready soon. I just fixed the hole in the radiator tank, where the drain plug broke off.

Even if it's not road legal, it should be going good on the farm soon. :D

I find having another beer and staring at it for awhile help's too!!

I'm kinda frustrated not being able to work on mine at the moment too, but sometimes other things take priority. :(

Will be good to have Booger up and running, We'll definatly have to organise a lada get together when your all ready for it!!
I'll bring miniskip up for that!! :D :D

every since i knew this hairy samoan dude that was into his cuddles, who had one, i've liked the ladas.. my only peeve was the fact the motors were prone to be throwin a hissy when splashed with water.. it'd look at the dew on a mild morning and it'd pull up its petty coat and sob like a rumless rex.. always thought the diesel mod would rock..

you've found some interesting issues when performin your mods and have found truly ingenious ways to counter them. neat to see some lateral thinkin and can do attitude..

well done sir..

neat little right up.. will be lookin forward to seein more vids and updates from ya..

Hay all

Well Me and the Wife have finally returned home to NZ for good!!! and with a south Island trip planned for all of Feb I need to (and have permission to) go full steam and get the Niva finished so we can take that.

after getting Christmas and New years out of the way I have finally got stuck in over the last two days. here is the progress and I am dam happy to have got back into it.

So I retrieve the lada from storage and drag it over to dads place, took a while to get the head back to where I left it with what needed what doing.
Biggest thing was pulling the engine and finding out why the clutch was not disengaging, I had done more research and it seemed that possibly the lada Pressure plate will fit onto the Peugeot Flywheel. So pull the engine/gearbox I did and low and behold even though it looks bigger and alot gruntier it bolted straight on. ( If only I had tried it originally but I just assumed that it would not Bugger!!!) As you can see there is quite a difference in the appearance and I am guessing the lada Friction plate was too thick for the Pug Pressure plate to cope with.

Image
The lada Clutch looks alot bigger but bolt pattern is the same

Image

the release forks are also alot further out.

Image

Dad my forgetful (Has Alzeimers) Helper... he loves working in the shed with me though.

So I chucked back in my old Lada clutch as it was looking like new still and bolted her all back together. threw it all back in and bobs your uncle after a quick bleed it works perfectly, proper freeplay and disengagement woop woop.

Now I can carry on getting everything all connected for the final time and do alot of tidying up of the wiring. I also Ran the breathers for the diffs,Tcase and Gbox up to the engine bay. I Also ran the airlines for the difflocks.

Image

And then with a little bit of time to spare I quickly knocked up a Steering box brace as Nivas tend to rip out their mounts from the thin panel. this way it sandwiches the body panel between the steering box and the plate.

Image

I am hoping to get it illegally drivable just to get it down to the exhaust shop on sat before we head off up north for 5 days so it should be ready for pick up when we are back!!!

From what I've seen the steering issue isn't the body its the alloy mounts splitting on the relay bar mount or the steering box its self dieing....

Great to see progress on Booger again!! Make sure you drop in here on your way south. :D

My steering ripped the crush tubes out of the 'frame', I added a plate on miniskip on the outside, and it has adaptor plate for power steering on inside of frame, made it nice and solid. (was a pain in the arse to get into work on with mine being diesel too!!)

Cheers for the comments fellas

Yes am Back for good and seems like I am nesting as well. we just got back from Whangarei where we were sizing up builders to build on our section up there. Wont be till early 2014 though.

Will start a South Island tour thread and try and touch base with anyone that I have talked to or is keen on meeting up... so watch out for it. Always keen on meeting good bastards that are keen to give the lada a bit of shit.. Ha ha

Reece yeah I know the box is week but mine is in good nick at the moment and have 2 spare ones ready for when it hang grenades, Was planning on putting Cloggys Toyota Cresida power steer box in (have it in the shed) but could not fit it in with the turbo. Soooo I will just have to be nice to mine ha ha. Will be coming to the bay for a bit as well so will have to try and pop around this time.

Dog will be sure to pop in after all the help you gave me on Booger a couple of years back.

Had taken Booger for a little spin before dropping him off to the exhaust shop and boy he sounded good (just the dump pipe on and lots of waste gate fluffing on lift off      )

Back brakes seemed to bed in as well and the handbrake improved alot ( I hope enough, I think it is struggling with the 31" tyres) Drove nice even though need to sort out the Camber and alignment.

Still heaps to do but got the call from the Exhaust shop as we were driving down today and it is all done.

Talking to Neil Miller the Cert Guy I am using in Hamilton and it seems the regs on the ball joint spacer for the upper wishbone to Hub joint has tightened up and it may push it into a Higher inspection/testing Zone (bugger) am popping into him to give him a heads up on it while on the way home tomorrow. He is also swamped with work and possibly the South Island trip is going to be delayed if he cant do it next week. :(

been a busy few days since the last post, trying to get time to work on the lada is a mission, My idea of free rein to get the lada finished is not quite what the wife had in mind ha ha

Decided to keep it short and use the pics to describe, if anyone wants more explanation or more pics just ask.

Image
Cheapest and easiest intake pipe as under no pressure. the dreaded PVC ha ha but it took me 2 min with a gas tourch and a block of wood to mold it like this so it clears the rocker cover.

Image
Temp mock up of where the intake and boost/intercooler pipes will be.

Image
intercooler still needs mounts, going to be a mission to get it sitting at the correct height to seal against the bonnet.

Image
the Wiring is deloomed and a mess.

Image
Went to fill the cooling system (lucky just with water) and found that the plastic fan clamp thingies that were supplied with the fan had holed the radiator in 3 places. they push through so must have nicked the fins. took it down to the rad shop and they said those mounts are shit and to make better ones as even if they fix the holes with the vibrations the plastic will wear against the fins again. so some right angle and a few bits of threaded rod and the Mk II version was born,(should have done it this way in the first place lazy bugger)

Looks good

Diff breathers (and gearbox and Tcase) just had a little mushroom one one valve thingy, Flicked it off and just did as per pic, No time to muck around trying to find the correct sized hose tails, Different threads in each breather go figure.

Image
Front diff lock line and front diff breather hose runs

Image
mounted new secondhand mitsi (alternator this time a 12v one) with a new belt. wired it up and tested 14.2 v yeeeehaaaa.

Image
Also moved the winch solenoid mount and relocated the window washer bottle. everything is starting to fit nicely, even the wiring is starting to look better. not going to wrap the wiring with insul tape as it just makes fault finding hard and looks crap after a while.

starting to look more organized. air box and snorkle will have to come later, but dont think I will be fording any deeper than 1.3m this summer.

Image
Biggest battery I could fit in. Should be up to the task.

Image
modify std battery tray with some angle to bracket the base of battery.

Image
some bolts and a top brace finish off the battery mounting system. God I love angle iron.(love my welder as well ha ha)

that is all for now, more wiring tomorrow and then I should be finished most of the electrics. then I need to get stuck into the box section sills and wheel arch cut. then I should be all set for the thurs appointment with the cert guy.
