Hi All Long time watcher, first time poster. Have just become the proud owner of the above vehicle. Had a 93 JLX for a few years and loved it to bits. Now that I have the escudo I am searching everywhere to find a owners manual/workshop manual. I gotta admit that the models/names/where they where sold has become a mind nightmare for me. Instead of searching for a 1997 Escudo Grand, are there better keywords to use. Motor is a H25A, but at this stage just happy to locate an owners manual. (And find out why I cant adjust the height of the steering wheel )
I can't really help you much. I have one of those Haynes manuals but they dont have anything to do with LWB and V6 models. Maybe there is another one around?
Also where abouts are you located in NZ. Plenty of people willing to help if they know where you are.

Hey Mate I am in Taupo. Mostly bought the machine cause the missus gets gets a bit authoritive when I want to drive to hunting and fishing spots in "HER" holden. Just looking to familiarise my self with the vehicle at this stage
I think I have a similar model, its still the old vitara v6 shape but it has the 2.5l engine, ABS and airbags? If so, mine does not have adjustable steering wheel column. I do have a link to a torrent for the owners manual if you would like it, let me know if I have the right model.
Model number should be TD-61W or TJ-61W or something like that. Let me know what yours is.
if its the newer grand vitara shape model no's are something 416 and something 420 from memory, I downloaded a manual for mine ages ago when I had mine and its sitting on my server @ home (at work at the mo ) will see if its what you need?
If you are looking for add on stuff TJM make alloy Airbag compatible bars, front diffs in these are a weak point (diesel ones had steel ones )

Hi there. The Japanese Escudo was originally the vehicle we knew as the Vitara. From late 1997 Japan had what we got in 1998 and called the Grand Vitara, but still called the Escudo in Japan. I've never heard of an 'Escudo Grand' with a 2.5 V6, but the 'Grand Escudo' is what we called the XL7. It ran from 2000 to about 2005 and had the extra long wheelbase, 7 seats and the H27A 2.7L V6 so the info would be irrelevant to your 1997 vehicle.
If you have a 1997 2.5L V6 it must be either the very last of the old square Vitara shape (an incredibly rare beast) or more likely a Grand Vitara V6.
Find a NZ handbook for a Grand Vitara (covers all models in the range) if yours is the later, rounder shape,
If it's the earlier square shape there is no direct NZ equivalent model but the Vitara handbook should cover everything except the engine (which is, however, VERY similar to the H20A 2.0L V6 in the NZ SE620 models from which it was developed)
The 3 numerals in the model designation are the number of cylinders and the capacity, i.e 1.6L 4cyl is a (XX)416 2.5L V6 is an (XX)625 etc.
The first letters are the body model which I can't recall from memory, but I think the original Vitaras were an SE, the Grand Vitaras were an SQ and the new-model Grand Vitaras are a JB.
The last letters in the NZ model code are the body style (W for 5Dr, V for 3Dr), the spec level (eg. JX or JLX) and transmission (A added for the autos)
So for example, a kiwi 3Dr 1600 auto JLX Vitara would be an SE416VJLXA
A 5dr V6 Grand Vitara manual would be an SQ625WJLX
Clear as mud? Hope this helps and you find the info you're after.
