A FRME TOWING

Post by wocky »

I was thinking about putting an a-frame on my fj40 ,to tow it to fundays, compitions, etc .Does anyone know whether I will be able to then register my old truck as a trailer?

I'm pretty sure that you won't need to. As for as I know you can A frame anything. You might want to hook up the cruiser tail lights to run of a trailer plug though. I don't think you have to, but it might be polite to other drivers.
Give the police or the LTSA a phone call, one of them should be able to tell you for sure.

So then if it's being A framed and it needs to be reg and wof, what is it? A trailer or a truck?
If its a truck then how would you reg it as a trailer?
If its a truck and it has to be warrented to tow it then why not just drive it?????
Seems to me that its all abit contradictry. :? :? :?

thanks for the replys.the reason its not reg and wof is that its always a hassle to warrent cos the brakes need repairing or the steering .I thought that if i was able to register it as a trailer it might be easier than hireing a trailer to take it anywere

Hiya,

Saw highway patrol a few weeks back, and a girl got done for no REG and no WOF and got pink stickered, she asked the cop about towing it and he said no, but when she asked about A-framing it, he say that was ok.

So does that that mean that they are legally different?

The towies use those 2 wheeled a frame type things, maybe thats an option?

..just to confuse matters.. :D

On the LTSA website http://www.ltsa.govt.nz/factsheets/09.html it says "until re-registration and relicencing is complete, a vehicle can't be driven on the road: it must be towed or transported by other means" That seems to me that it's OK to tow an un-registered vehicle.....

A few years ago a guy in New Plymouth had an RX2 race car, that was registered as a trailer and A-framed every where. It had a trailer plug made up that worked the runnin, brake and indicator lights.
