Got a 4wd mate from Oz coming over for the above dates. Have planned a trip for him as follows:
28/10 SAT- leave chch and head for hoki, spend nite there. On way going into Taipo valley.
29/10 SUN- Hoki to Ross, head up Mt Greenland. Back down and head to Greymouth spend nite there.
30/10 MON- options... Cockeye creek and no name rd and up Napoleon's Hill and Waipuna tunnels. Too tell you the truth I'm over noname rd and cockeye(done them too many times). Another option is leave Grey do Waipuna tunnels and Napoleon's hill head to Reefton go in to Waitahu river and stay nite at Montgomery Hut. Major piss up and bonfire this nite if we do this option. 8)
31/10 TUES- head out of Waitahu and head to Inangahua. Do Inangahua to Waimangaroa Rd ( need permission and key) stay nite in Westport.
1/11 WED- Westport to Waiau head into Conway river stay at usual campsite or hunters camp further downstream
2/11 THURS- head downstream to beach and back to CHCH

He really hates steep mountians and deep rivers, hence the itinery. Anm opening this up to interested parties but limiting to ten trucks in total. This will be one of my safari type trips most likely camping all the way. Piss up every nite but away by 0930 each day. Trucks must be set up with MT's, snorkels, rated recovery points and recovery gear. Mt Greenland can be tough from 3/4 the way up. 8)
Who's in :?:

Got about 4 definites and a couple of maybes. 30" tyres, why do you bother. Got some secondhand 31" Pirelli MT's with tread if interested. I will probably have the smallest tyres at 33"x10.5"x15"

Sure is, and lives up to his name. Self made millionare and allround good bastard. Took him and hs mssus on my frst central trip when I first got the truck, they hired a landcruiser camper. Was thinking about going back this time as the roads may have been open when he was here but he did not want snow, damn.

Yeah well the truck is going again...kept flattening the batteries due to an auxillary power supply problem! So, all going well I will be there.
Shouldn't Cockeye come after no name road coming from that direction?
Also, 30" tyres could be a problem on napoleans hill, but have ropes etc.

Al I found a new track after napoleans hill by accident. Took a wrong turn and found an interesting downhill called subaru hill.
I know two others in the area if you have a good panel beater...grade 5 plus!
Robbie...GQ, Integra GSR, Suzuki 250.

Al,
just got back from the Coast, and found that the tracks we did (No Name, Napoleans Hill, Mt Greenland) were all reletively easy.
We had my Safari on 33" Mongrels (running 40psi  ), Frank from the forum in his Pajero on 33's, Discoenewhere in his Diso with 35's, and a standard Hilux on 32's.

Napoleans had a couple of deepish ruts on the way into the river, but nothing major, No Name took around 60mins and was 4wd hi all the way (except for one play area), and Mt Greenland only had 2 sections where the Hilux needed a small tow.

Was quite suprised at how good the tracks were, which was a little dissapointing.

Frank did VERY well yet again, and I was risking being shown up by the Pajero several times.

Got a few boring pics, so will try to load some.

Rob, where is this Subaru Hill?

Going South (uphill) on Napoleans hill, go along the top and I think it is the second right turn. Just before you start going downhill. It would be interesting to try doing it uphill...now there is a plan!!!

thats the way us locals here do it, it got its name because at the bottom of the hill there is a rolled subaru leone in the bushes! Its quite narly and depending on the previous weather it can get quite rutted. Further down that track, or up it depwnding on where you start there is a washed out culvered which is only just wide enough for a truck to pass over.
Its quite a good track if you want something hard at the start of the day by going up.

if u go up napoleon s hill from the orwell creek road there are three tracks up. one is dead easy, the other two are a bit more challenging going uphill. the toughest track in the area is to the west between the two caves and is not used very often because it is relatively unknown. one way in one way out. there is a hill in there that has not been driven as far as i know. put in by bulldozer a few years ago so thers the challenge. noname road, cockeye creek and napoleons hill are all used by a local operator who does tagalong tours so they can be driven by fairly shiny trucks. :D
