righto then, after hours of faaarking around with tapes, rulers, vivid markers and lots of looking with the eye, I believe I am at the stage where I'm ready to drill at least the big hole and then determine where the other 6 or 7 holes are gonna go

I'm relatively happy with the placement of 3 of them, but its a bitch when the snorkel sits proud of the guard because of the sleeve coming out of it for the air box

so anyways, my guard has lots of pencil marks and vivid marks all over it and now I'm on the the lookout for a metal holesaw that will cut a 82mm hole..............

hey skiddy.

you don't HAVE to use a hole saw. If you have a jig saw you can buy a cheap steel blade from the warehouse and cut the hole out with that. Put down lots of tape to protect the guard first tho :-D

way cheaper.
phone Ross Bolus (secretary of the BOP club) He'll save you.

righto then, I caught up with Sig today and borrowed his hole saw, then got home and spent a few hours drilling, cutting, cursing, drawing and generally getting faaarked off the further I got, but I made it.

It started with an empty canvas and a few tools......
Image

all taped up and ready for the holesaw......
Image

Bloody holesaw moved around too much and made a bit of a mess before the drill bit broke.....
Image

So I taped it back up and drew another circle and then remembered how good I have cut circles in the past and the method I used.....
Image

not a bad effort.....
Image

Trial fit in hole, perfect fit, so check to see how the holes lines up from the pissing around with 2 templates.....
Image

The holes were a wee bit off. Original holes were the vivid circles and the actual locations needed to be where the pencil crosses are.....
Image

Image

So after drilling the holes and stretching them all a teeny wee bit, we have a snorkel that fits, without too much carnage.....
Image

Image

So there ya go, I now have a new template that I will send to the supplier so that the next 80 series snorkel they sell will not have the owner tearing thier hair out like me.
Its only bolted in place at the moment, I still need to fit the little plate that bolts to the A pillar, which is looking like another mission and then pull it all apart and clean up any bare steel and fill holes with sealant and put it back together and the attach it to the air box.

Its been a mission, and for those of you who know me, you will know how non-mechanical I am and how tricky it would of been for me.

So I'm chuffed its done with no noticable damage to my guard

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Did you sand and touch up your guard (both sides) where you cut it out?

thanks heaps to Reece and Jerry

the snorkel is now fitted and functional

sucks air bloody good, just ask Reece

I will post some pics up later on, but all I can say is that unless, these guys can show you pics of the snorkel attached to a vehicle a give you an assurance that the template is correct and the right amount of bolts/screws will be in the pack and the joiner will be the correct length etc etc etc, then I would steer clear.

Unfortunately I have been the guinea pig test for this particular snorkel, and once I can be bothered, I will send the suppliers back a correct template for an 80 series cruiser.

You will have to pay more, but a reputable brand would be my choice in the future.................

this is the joiner that was in the kit, it compresses down to 300mm long, the gap it had to fit into was only 200mm long.WTF........

Image

Reece piecing snorkel together with the hose that Jerry bought along........

so there it is, finally all bloody done.........

Good to hear it's sorted skid. Must be cool to have people come up and help out like that.

Hope you're in a better mood now bud.

Oh and re you being a guinea pig on this?
I've been one on many occasions with my 40. It's tough, but when it's sorted it's worth the extra effort I recon.

So!!
You gunna give that river another go??

I think by memory the suppliers in NZ were Traxion

http://www.traxion.co.nz/default.asp

4wd bits also sell them but don't think they are the supplier
