terrano using 70 litres for 400km's...
Im guessing that is quite abit too much? it is for me anyway.... costs more to run than my sr20det car to run just with fuel alone, without the RUC's.
It is blowing black smoke if i put my foot down. One thing i thought it could be is buggered injectors? I dont really want to pay $400 on recondishoning to find out thats not the reason its using so much.
What are some simple things to get more economy?
Cheers

Check
Aircleaner
Snorkel or intake pipe for obstructions ...leaves etc .
Fuel Filter....might be blocked.

Re: terrano using 70 litres for 400km's...
holy crap batman!
my 3l v6 terrano will get more in commuter traffic on less petrol!
On the open road, Im good for 550km, 600km if I'm steady, more if im _really_ careful.
couple of weekends ago, I went down Waikato and around Taupo and back. 700km on 1.25 tanks of gas, including hoiking it off road, and up tongariro/whakapapa.

Wow thats some impressive figures for a 3L V6. My old one, running 33s used to get on average about 300-310 on a tank of gas. Only thing it wouldnt pass was a service station.

Got brand new aircleaner, gave truck a rev with intake pipe out of box and still had the same a mount of black smoke so im guessing no obstructions. I've looked on the Inj pump for the adjustment screw, but cant see it? is it under the housing/mount? and to lessen the fuel, i turn anticlockwise?
One other thing, My fans in the truck dont seem to work, I turn them right up to 4 i think it is, and you can here it as if its blowing as hard as it can, But little to nothing comes out?
Re: terrano using 70 litres for 400km's...
My hilux was thirsty and i put reconditioned injectors in it and gained about 65 more k out the the tank wound the fuel pump back a little which helped get another 30 odd out of it.
How many ks has it done? I would pay for the injectors if you plan to keep it for a bit. Definitely helped on my truck. Cheers Pete

Re: terrano using 70 litres for 400km's...
also if you take your injectors out they can test them for you and if they are ok just get new washers and stick them back in. Mine where releasing at 120 bar rather than 160 bar

They hide the screw for a reason

Unless you know injection pump layout, they are hard to find.
To lessen the fuel you screw it in, and then you would have to raise the idle screw, but it doesn't sound like someone has been in there playing with it tho.
I'm starting to think that the pump or injectors are out of adjustment.
The fan thing is a common issue with the slide type switches. Can be the switch unit or the fan itself

Sounds like you really need some guidance.
You know my number.

Re: terrano using 70 litres for 400km's...
I'll give you a text tomorrow. hopefully you'll beable to help me track it down.
Just wondering also if you can get LSD diffs for the front of a terrano? From what I've been reading, S13 Silvia diffs are the same as the front of the terrano (R180) Just need to know if they are also the same ratio??

I've been looking into the same sort of thing too. I'm not prepared to say much publicly until I have researched it some more. i will say that you would have to swap the internals from the donner diff into the housing of a Terrano and put the ring gear on the diff head

I have a mate looking into this for me, but i keep forgetting to drop the front diff head i have lying around into him. I have a few spares of these due to the couple I have broken.

We need to measure the PCD of the ring gear and the diameter and distance of the bearings to see if everything will fit, not to mention the spline count.
Txt me when ya can.

Re: terrano using 70 litres for 400km's...
Simon(sibainnmud) walked me through adjusting the injector pump, which made no difference. So he said to disconnect wastegate and see if smoke goes away at higher boost, which it seems to have(hard to tell cos of rain today) But yeah thanks a bloody lot Simon! Been a real good help.
One other thing. Im going to tow a vehicle on a trailer from timaru to Rangiora, I have heard that terrano auto boxes are bad for towing and give no warning for crapping out. Would it be better to tow with O/D off?

Re: terrano using 70 litres for 400km's...
Yes most definitely. Even with the manual box, I never load up 5th, as it is the second gear shaft and the bearings can't take it.
As I mentioned on the phone, your injection pump still has issues but if you drive with a bit of mechanical sympathy, you'll be fine. You may have to consider a 2.5" dump pipe to truly unleash the potential.
You are most welcome

Touch wood she is reliable. Drove from Amberley to Dunedin with a car transporter on, used 56L on way down. On the way back had another terrano on the transporter, Climbing hills outta dunedin at 15Kp/h, any faster and the heat gauge was rising fast. Made it all the way back, and it used 75-80L for that trip. But made it all the way without using water or oil! happy as.
Re: terrano using 70 litres for 400km's...
you need to wind the pump back a bit mate dont tow in over drive fit the biggest trans cooler you can i use eng oil coolers and make sure u service the trans drop the oil every 20000kms and change the filter every 40000km hopes this helps mate

I covered all that in the txt conversation over the weekend.
Winding the pump back made no difference at all.
The pump should be looked at soon.
The engine heating up may be a result of too much fuel as he has no pyro-gauge (EGT).
TD, you sound like you have a few clues. I see by your posts that you are a newbie. What part of God'szone are you from?
By the sound of it, you have hammered a D21 to death, so we have a few things in common

Re: terrano using 70 litres for 400km's...
I would still be getting injectors checked if it was me. If they are really stuffed they could be causing the bad fuel consumptioun. A mechanic told me a while ago that bad injectors can even let fuel through on the intake stroke but I'm not sure how much truth there is to that. Seems to be a cheaper option to get them checked before getting someone to look at the pump for you

Yeah well the terrano that we bought back is getting new motor, so ill chuck the injectors from it in and see how it goes. That should rule them out, aslong as they all good.
I also wanna get an EGT gauge, but dont really want to spend $80 on a gauge, as i only work 1 day a week other 5 days is studying..
Also gonna try do 50mm sus and body lift

It smoked constantly on all cylinders so the injectors were less likely to be at fault.
It sounded like the boost compensator was stuck or something like that.
Plus he has access to a spare set of injectors too.

Sweet. I wouldn't expect injectors to make it smoke constantly. Mine where pretty stuffed and still only smoked with more than about half throttle so like you say fuel pump is perhaps more likely to be the problem. Though I am definitely not an expert! Just going off what I have found on my truck.
If the other truck has done a few ks I would get those checked before throwing them in. They should be able to put them on their test rig for free and see what pressure they are holding. That way you know what you are dealing with.
Cheers,
Pete

Also i think i might give the auto a service. What oil is used for that? plus will i need the kit thing, new gasket etc for sump? At bnt the other day one kit was 50ish for 14bolt sump and the 16bolt sump was 150 or something stupid...
Not smoking consistantly like that. Only when i put foot down, but when it starts to smoke its constant, no puffs sorta thing..

Thanks Pete.
I said the exact same thing to him. Just get the spray pattern and open/close pressures checked

if you have wound the pump back and its still smokeing it will be the pump over time the oil seal in the front of the pump gives out and eng oil finds its way in to the diesel and does not burn as clean as diesel thats ur smoke
