Welcome the newbie...

Post by Fex »

Hey all, my name's Rich, I'm new here and I'm also new to the whole off roading world. I just bought my first truck and its not exactly standard lol. Got it off my mate and plan to learn the ways of driving dirt.

Its a 1985 short wheel base Land Cruiser with a 1989 3.4L Turbo deisel engine. Its been jacked on some sort of high suspention lol, 33" Mudzillas, strengthened dif's and cv's, a snorkle etc etc. I'm really not sure of everything hes done but I know hes spent a lot of money on it. Seems to get into many different places lol.

Yea so I'm going to be out and about trying to get used to it off road and hopefully I don't roll it or something. :P

Hey there, yea deffinatly. I don't think I'll do anything for awhile? I wouldn't know what to do lol... It seems to have all the main things I would need to go off road. Just needs a headunit, I have no music!

Man I'm so used to cars lol. Should I get bags? Just jokes haha!

Well I do need to look at getting a ball bar, I have just had the standard bumper put back on with a re-inforced bar behind that. Also maybe a winch..

Welcome.

The front bar is fine wait until you get brave enough to attempt something it hooks on, as far as a winch that can wait you need to get out with some others and see how far you want to go it is a very capable truck and you may find you don't need one or others have them.

Spent the money on fuel.

True, true... Well I finally got this truck into 4WD mode and off the stupid tarseal! After work today before it got dark I drove around the hill I live on looking for an off road, very muddy track I went on a few years back with a mate. Found it, put 4WD on and up I went! OHH how much fun it was! Went through some boggy bits, up some pretty steep banks and off some pretty steep banks etc etc, it was cool! Took some photos on my phone, as I took a geez around... :P

I really need to get a digital camera lol.

Hey - welcome.
Looks like the two front tyres are on round the wrong way - The Mudzilla's are directional and put them on the right way, then watch it climb.

Depends on how you look at it.
My mates ran Mudzillas on the front backwards. I found up hill the rears were doing more work, and the braking downhill was better when reversed.
Also made a difference when reversing uphill, as the weight was on the front tyres which were now rotating in the correct direction.

RE: NJV6
They are on the oposite direction for more traction off road, they dig the dirt better, but on the road they suck.

RE: MATT4U
They photo's wern't where the mud was lol, otherwise I would have not stepped out to take a photo lol, I was in my nice new work shoes. :P

Some Rock Crawlers run there directional tyres (Mudzilla's, Claws) Backwards as it gives them better turning as it pulls them onto an object rather than pushing the away from it.

Have you noticed anything like that on hard terrain Fex?

Sorry but I can't see how a directional tyre can work in the mud better backwards. The point of a directional tyre is so it can clear and get a fresh bite. Rocks yes, Mud no.

Well I had a very good fun and scary Saturday! Don't know if you guys heard of the track in Queenstown, but its the Macetown track from Arrowtown which has about 10 river crossings and some steep terrain. Well I had water rising at my feet and up at the windows and had no traction on the river floor and I was freeking out! Chopped into low gearing and starting to reverse and wiggle the steering a bit after about a minute, I finally managed to get some traction on the ground and reverse out of the river. I was so freaked out! Somehow the truck got pushed into a deeper part which I was trying to avoid.. Did a few banks climbs and stuff, was such good fun though!

Also did a nice steep and rocky bush track up through Queenstown hill which was actually very fun, lots of different anlged terrain, rock, mud and grass with broom everywhere, you cant even see haha.

Finally got some dirt on the truck!

First experience of off roading driving myself was a success..

Nup only my truck, usually the track is not too bad and you can do it on your own but it had been raining and the rivers had rased a lot I think. I'm so lucky and happy that I got out as I was really stuck, forward and backward took me no where. It wasn't till I start steering from left to right to left that I actually slowly started to move. Lucky the truck stayed on too, because the water would have been right through the engine.

hehe, was wondering who would bring that up :D
Either the truck didn't make it through because the tyres were on backwards, or it got out because they were on backwards, or BOTH

the river must be bloody high to be up to your windows!! though the first few crossings can be deepish. and there is a big hole on the 3rd i think it is where you cross under the water pipe if you go to the left. had to tow a jeep back to arrowtown from the once after they too on some water. that river is quite predictable and good to learn in. select the right gear before you go in as you dont wat to be chainging gear when you are in there.
