Post by pagar »

Hey all you Toyota lovers, I have just failed my high speed brake test for certifying my modified bj74 cruiser, any of you know of any fast brake upgrades? disc front drum rear at the moment, tried disc rear but found had low pedal pressure issues. cheers Stephen

hi there i have put a VH44 extra booster in my 70 and it made a huge difference
two other mates have put the same VH44 booster in other 4x4s
one was a prado v8 upgrade and the other was a pajero that now runs 35s and they have passed certifying
you can get the booster from any B and T
cheers Brent

I agree with both of these guys, with this setup you shouldnt have any issues with cert.

My master cylinder has outputs for front and rear brakes so my extra booster is only plumbed into the front brake circuit, makes a big difference to underbraked 70 series

I have got one on its way to me to see if I can fit it in my engine bay somewhere. if you are just boosting the front how did you get on with cert wof for brake bias? I will phone PBR and see if they do a twin. I presume you have disconected your factory servo? cheers

pagar, buy the look of Sadams photo he is running the extra booster in tandem with the original brake set up. My brakes where nothing startling before fitting Bendix 4WD disk pads they made a huge difference but don't last very long.

Its mounted directly infront of the toyota master on the front guard. Having the extra pressure to the front will act like a proportioning valve which you will probably need to get brake bias right anyway

Yep what Fitzy said, when Howie stuck mine in he said it needs to be as close to the master cylinder as you can get it and keep the brake line connecting them as short as possible, mines in a 70 series and it fits snug and out of the way mounted on the inner guard beside the master cylinder. My truckss only running the factory proportoning valve at the back and its broken anyway so I dont know what its set to but the brakes work fine on mine even though its never been through cert at this stage, Rob did his 70 before me with the same combo of extra booster and subaru callipers on the rear and his went straight through certification. The extra booster mostly gives you that big hit and increased clamping on the front callipers when you jump on the brake pedal and it makes it seem more like tryng to stop a late model car than a heavy old truck

Fakey go down and see Andrew at BNT and quote VH44, I think they are some generic part they used to use on old pommy cars or something like that, cant remember how much but somewhere around $300-350 rings a bell?

Way back in time before manufacturers fitted Power Brakes as standard equipment to their vehicles VH44 booster where used as an after market power brake system on a lot of cars, Valiant,Holden,Fords and yes a lot of Pommy cars, they certainly replaced the two size twelve boots on the brake pedal to try and stop the Aussie clunkers with a tandem horse float trying to push them through an intersection. ,

Well I got all inthusiastic last week and bought booster, I cannot fit mine where sadam has his as mine is a 13bt and has a deisel preheater and a whole lot of other crap between master cylinder and air filter. I will hjave to get inventive on the mounting front. anybody mounted one in under dash? might be a bit far from the master cylinder.

Yeah what you'll have to do is pop the 13bt out and stick a 350 in there and there will be plenty of room to moiunt the extra booster, Fakeys found he had top do the same to his cruiser

With my VH44 installations they haven't all been close to the master cylinder, I have fitted them on the opposite side of the engine bay and did a mk1 Escort rally car with the booster under the dash on the passenger side, when the system is all plumbed up and bleed the M/cyl; is pushing the fluid that has a residual line pressure in the pipe to the booster cylinder so the distance shouldn't make much difference, how ever as Howie says closer is probably better, but I have found that there has been a vast improvement with boosted brakes than no boost.

Thanks for that, I had a play around with the factory brakes last night and think something is not quite right with the master cylinder which will not be helping the issue, we tried three times to bleed the brakes and kept getting small amounts of air out of the rear so I am going to pull the thing today and have a wee looksee and may go for a new one. then add the booster..... oh the joys of four wheeling......

I had the same problem with my brake system when I lifted the suspension so I assumed it was to do with the load sensing proportioning valve. I could bleed it, get a good pedal go round a corner an the pedal would drop to the floor again.
Thought it might have been in the drums so checked adjustment etc an all was ok.
Ive since removed the valve, put in new diffs with rebuilt calipers an the brakes were still shit  hence the putting in the new master cylinder in mine

Yeah rear shoes are right out there. I suspect it is the master cyl as I can here a rubber sqeak when pumping up. pulled it out last night and pulled the pistons and although there is no real sign of wear the very edge (outside of seal) was wet and considering I paid to have it sleaved when I rebuild brakes 12 months ago I have no sleave in bore so new one is going in. mainly at the point now of no mucking about as I need to be certified for the end of the month.

Yeehaa it has passed certification, Got the booster in and then still not good enough so got some slotted rotors made at Znoelli. now have no room to put my airfilter back in, so have made a temporary snorkle out of down pipe till after Easter Weekend when I have time to get an ali one made up and will run a pod filter on top.. so now the beast is (well nearly) road legal. Still have a mountain of stuff to do before easter but after three months work I can now go get a wof etc and take it home to finish interior and refit of second electrical system stereo and air supply for lockers etc. thanks for your help guys. Stephen
