NorWest Unformed Roads

Post by lincooln »

Hi all

I will be organising a unformed road recce / trip on the 12th March (Saturaday)

Will be doing 4 roads that are pretty commonly used then heading out and trying to find more. I will have a map book that shows every paper road in the old Rodney District (RD). So we will have heaps to choose from

Will be an official NorWest OHV Club Run. So a $5 fee for members and a $10 for non members.

Cheers
Lincoln

I thought so. We have a key for some roads that the council gave us. and the rest are usually tracks already and just waiting for us to go on them.

its all about finding new places to go.

That's cheap compared to the $350+ I was charged for the CV (inner and outer LHS, with the boots) for the Lada.

But at least it might be going, and I'll be able to take it on its first trip.

i dont normally say things like this, (and i am keen to come along) but... it might be a good idea to think twice about naming the roads you plan on going to. This is a public forum, and ANYONE can view the information you put on here. Lots of people look on ORE for places to 4wd in the auckland region, and some of these people will not respect the track, the neighbours, or quite frankly the law.

Most "paper" roads have been gated around auckland, and the few that remain i would hate to see gated as well, especially if it due to people being reckless.

I think the club trip is a great idea. The type of 4wder who joins a club, is usually a respectable and responsible driver. It is everyone else who reads this forum and goes for a "skid" themselves on the roads you mention on a later date.

Dont take all of this the wrong way :) it is a great idea to organise the trip, and i will definetly try to come along.

I personally have met people (in the rodney too) who would be more than happy to take you up on that challenge :P a gate can only do so much.

Having the key is a good idea, it makes access to unformed roads a lot easier ;) Can't wait to see what is behind some of the gates :)

Agree with Big-al here, would hate to see access lost to certain local areas we use, gated or not.

Access cant be 'lost' as such, seeing as the roads are still classified as accessible to the public.
If they wanted to gate them, then they would do so as they did with the other roads, and have a key for themselves to keep, and give a key to a safeholder (my Mum), who can lend the key to an approved individual/club.

Yes, you are right. If a section of land is classified as a road, then we have a legal right of passage over that road (formed or unformed).

The council does not seem to care about our legal right :( if they think it is best to gate a road, then they will. If people cause damage to a track, the surrounding area, annoy the neighbours, leave trails of mud down the road etc... then it is more likely the council will gate the road than if it is only really being used by responsible 4wders (like those often found in 4wd clubs)

In some ways the gating of the roads can be good, cos it does keep the idiots out. :)

And another thing... All neighbors of the gated roads have to be notified when there is a run, so that everyone is aware exactly who is going to be on the road, and when. So it keeps tabs on who goes in.

I didnt managed to sus out the starter just put it back together and roll started it...
Went for a drive out to muriwai and was gonna go for a little blast down the beach but I had this cotton cloth over my air intake which apparently was choking it so I took it off and all seemed fine then I was driving it along and radiator hose popped with a decent bang ( I thought it was the lid popping off my overflow bottle).
Managed to get it off the sand then it stalled, cooled it down roll started it then was a couple kms up the road and it just lost all power going up a hill then it stalled with a big cloud of smoke from the engine and a small trail of oil stretching 5-10metres down the road...

It wouldnt roll start after this so put it on the tow truck

Haha true that. My mate wants a Caldina Gt-t, but after coming out with us s few times, he says he might get a 4wd instead. So much more fun you can have legally.

Oh, and you should get a Lada

Haha id love a new truck and a lada project on the side (so i can still get out and enjoy the offroad with a working 4wd) :P

Yeah I want him to get a 4wd.

And hey, the Lada is going, and the Fiva is nearly going. Neither are road legal though...

And the Lada should be going on this trip. So long as me and Lincoln don't stuff up the c.v. replacement...
