What are the good Mud tyres to get?
Hi am looking at doing 4x4ing in woodhill forest and anywhere else with mud! does anyone know what are the good mud tyres to get? My budget is around 350 per tyre
Re: What are the good Mud tyres to get?

If you already know everything, DON'T ask bloody questions!!
Re: What are the good Mud tyres to get?
You could go for Khumo KL71's I think I payed slightly under for each. This is for 33's.
But as like above silverstones have great grip in the clay, personally I think they are quit aggressive but I do still like them.
Cheers

Mudstars for me.
Great in all conditions and not too noisy on the road.

probably want to add a few more details mate. Like what sort of truck, how much on road driving you do and how much you care about road manners, what size tyres, what mods to your truck & engine size. etc etc etc
There are a lot of great tyres around and they all have a purpose because we all use our trucks in a different way.

Re: What are the good Mud tyres to get?
Depends what else you do with the truck. Will the tyres just be for off roading? Or on road as well?
If it’s just for offroading like wopass said the Silverstone’s. They are a very aggressive tyre you will go lots of places with those on. Probably be looking around the $400 mark per tyre new. But that depends what size you are after.

Re: What are the good Mud tyres to get?
some nice road tyres work well

Re: What are the good Mud tyres to get?
what are the Cheapest 32 or 33 muds?
Re: What are the good Mud tyres to get?
As above, I had the Silverstones, great in mud but damn noisy if they are used on the road, not to mention dangerous in the wet if coupled with a petrol engine.
My pick would be Goodyear Wranglers...you should be able to get a set for less then $350 a tyre if you shop around.
Maxxis Bighorns are also pretty good and not too noisy.
Had all the above, favourite would be the Wranglers.

In REAL mud Wranglers and most M/T are shit unless you have huge HP and light weight like a buggy or rally truck etc
Like others have said the Silverstone mt117 is the best MUD tyre for the price, yes they dig holes but they also grip so well you will use way less throttle than normal, and most that might complain about hole digging will prob have heavy trucks like patrols etc (at a guess).
A silverstone MT117 has less lugs than a simex ET so they usually preform better in the real sticky stuff aswell.
And a 32in is normally dearer than a 33in as they are less popular and common.

Re: What are the good Mud tyres to get?
maxxis bighorns. awesome tire, grouse in mud and quiet on road... cheap too!

Re: What are the good Mud tyres to get?
my fav mud tyre would have to be the Gt radial savero mud terrain.
In 33 size lugs aren't bigger than voids so clear well and grip in the mud and wear really well on the road .
Far better than the bighorns in the mud and go for $330ish(well down here anyhow)

Re: What are the good Mud tyres to get?
I don't agree that wranglers and most MT tyres are shit in 'real mud'.
Personally too, I like knowing that even in the drive to and from the mud, the tyres on my truck aren't going to deafen me, shake my drivetrain to bits, and possibly send me careening off the road if I give them gas on the road. That's how I felt about the MT117s, they were THAT bad even on short drives to get to the fun stuff.
It's a personal thing I guess, they are good in the mud.

You do have to drive according to the conditions and condition of your vehicle, including what tyres you have fitted. Silverstone MT117 Xtreme is the worst mannered on road tyre we know of and in a lot of 'mud' conditions the best off road tyre.

Re: What are the good Mud tyres to get?
That is why I will be setting up a wheel locking bar on my trailer so I can trailer my MT 117s to or close to a track. Then swap them and leave my old worn bfgs locked on the trailer which will be locked to a fence or tree.
This is the plan anyway, anyone had a bad experience doing this? Like trailer and wheels not there when you get back?

The big problem with doing this is many tracks arent a loop & you end up miles from where you started & not back at your trailer.
Re: What are the good Mud tyres to get?
Got to agree that for $350 each Silverstones are probably the best "bang for buck" as mud tyres go.
But...worth noting that the MT117 is available in at least 3 different flavours that I know of.
Xtreme - very aggresive bias ply and not nice on tar seal
Sport - bit less aggresive radial construction, much nicer on road
LT - same pattern as Sport but cross ply construction
I have LTs and love em, wouldnt put them on a daily driver though.

yeah but it wont be as long a drive back to the trailer as all the way home well most of the time anyway, any track close I will just leave them on.
Want to visit our southern friends sometime and show my mrs some real NZ so will carry the Silverstones on the trailer to use for when we do tracks and the like!!.
Re: What are the good Mud tyres to get?
I find it strange that no one has mentioned Simex Tyres ??!! Maybe thats because of the budget of $350 per tyre, but Im still surprised. Seems like the Silverstones are taking over from the Simex.
Ive never had Silverstones but I have been told they are really hard to balance etc so not so great for on road, but the business for off road.
Im running the Khumo KL71's in a 33". They cost me $330 each a little while back and I think they are great. They dont clear as well as the really aggresive tyres, but they get me places (or maybe thats the Lokka's lol ). They are fairly quiet on the road too. Nevertheless I will be looking at getting Silverstones next time round as I run seperate tyres for offroad.
Cheers

Most X-ply style tyres are a bitch to balance inc simex,I would go the simex myself just for the extra height and the tripple block rides not bad on road(club truck)close to $500 each though.a few guys in my club have the silverstones and they do work very well, but they need to be touching the ground to do this.

Having spent a month driving round town with Ricks Silverstones on, I wouldn't put them on a daily driver. You can adjust your driving to suit the tyres no problem. But the road noise will drive you insane..

Re: What are the good Mud tyres to get?
So...I swapped tyres with a mate at the weekend. He wanted to borrow my tyres for LV cert.
I have MT117 LT (cross-ply) in 285/85/16 (approx 35")
He has MT117 Sport (radial) in 285/75/16 (approx 33")
I was amazed at the difference! His radials are heaps quieter and better mannered on tar seal than my cross-plys, and they are essentially the same tyre!
The MT117 sport is still a pretty aggresive tyre but quite well mannered.
Never tried the xtremes so can't comment but can only imagine that they would be worse than my LTs...which would not be too flash!

I have recently got the aggressive mt 117 here is what I can tell you
very loud on road (at 50kms its louder than the engine)
so good offroad they will take your truck to its limits when you finally do get stuck it will be STUCK.an you will need lots of rope an good trucks to get you out.
