Odlins Road condition past summit?

Post by adimw2 »

Has anyone in the last couple of months been down towards the green hut on Odlins road? I'm planning a trip down in about 2 weeks and was hoping someone has been down recently.

Cheers,

I was up there the end of Jan and it was my first time in there so im not sure what the track is normally like but we spent a few hours filling in 2 of the washouts around the culverts so we could get accross as there was no track to even use at one section, ull see it in the pics were my Lux and the rangie are crossing beside the culvert, we had to fill that entire area in with logs and rocks, good fun. :)

We went to the Hut and turned around, ive heard you can get thru to Otaki forks, does anyone know about this.?? that would be a great mission.

My understanding is that it has been many years (decades) since you could get all the way through to Otaki Forks. Mountain bike mates talk about going all the way through - but even they have to carry their bikes some of the way. Furtherest I have been is down to the Snowy (South? Waiotauru) River on a CCVC trip, some years ago.

Oh right, if the mountain bike boys have to carry the bikes some of the way then trucks would have no show eh, thats a shame as it would be a great drive without having to turn around at the hut and go all the way back out, wonder how hard it would be to re-open the tighter stuff. 8)

I'd been keen to see how much work is involved.

Last time someone tried to drive through there they died, was not a very nice thing to hear, there is a memorial site at the hut and it holds the key for the 4x4 he drove, was very lucky that he took his kids out....

Don't think it is a good idea to try to open it back up....

I visited the site where he fell off. Was a very unfortunate accident on a very narrow peice of track. Just around the corner from there is a massive slip which is what stopped access to the snowy
