I got really sick of the saggy dirty roof lining.

I found myself striping the interior one afternoon.......


It was well dark by the time i got the roof panels out


Stopped for a quick coffee and started stripping the old fabric off.

You can see the foam backing on the fabric has failed:

Surfed the net and found a dude in Oz who had done his roof lining with a fabric called Front Runner. Went hunting in NZ and found a place called W.Wiggins who did a equivalent called Boston Low Pile Lining.

Its a bit wooly for my liking, but had awesome stretch in both directions, was cheeeeeeep and about the right colour.

I used an imperial shit load of Ados and glued it on, left it for 24hrs, then chucked all back together.

As usual its pretty rough, but looks so much better than the dirty saggy old lining!!!!

I don't rate Ados, but was all i could get at Bunnings on a Saturday morning!!!! If it lasts for 6mnths with out sagging I'll be stoked!!!!!!

and yup I gotta agree, its pretty rough just like all your work, that reminds me I better drop the 80 off at your place one day for some rough work

But, could you explain what you meant by

The standard 16" steel rims in the above pic's don't have the right offset for nth island tracks, they sit inside the guards by at least 35mm

Now that its in the truck, comparing it to a pic of the front runner fabric, the front runner is a bit agricultural compared to the boston low pile lining from Wiggins. I reckon the wiggins stuff looks better as a roof lining.

The main reason for using it is the fact that it can be molded to the shape of the roof and it stays in shape with out being under tension, so once you stretch it to shape it stays there. Real easy to work with if you haven't done it before like me

Recommend sourcing a good glue before you start. I really believe the Ados will fail

with the tires sitting flush with the outside of the bodywork then they will lean on the enviorment rather than the bodywork

not always the case even when your wheels stick out 2" past the flare that sticks out 2", you still manage to smash only the snorkel

have ya got an auto upholsterer near you? could try askin them what type of liquid styles glue they use on decent door card refabs and gangsta sub enclosure coverings..

Autex also supply front runner at good prices.

We keep a small amount is stock so if people want off cuts PM me and ill see what i can do.

We use it in alot of vehicle we build and use Bostik Tripple 5 Natural Spray Glue.Sticks like shit to a blanket if you try peel it off you destroy the front runner so it your ados fails give that a go.

So what better to do with it, than to hang it off the front of a truck

This afternoon stripped the bumper and bull bar off, and did a quick mock up with a couple of bits of 50 x 50 x 5 angle and a piece of 200 x 5 flat bar that was floating around in my scrap bin.





Dived right in and stripped some more of the front of the truck and glued in the mounts for the winch plate.


Once that was done, it was plain sailing from there. Pinched a tow hook off The 50, cut the center out of the bumper, mounted the Hawse and gave it all a quick coat of insta-bling



Next up was to try and re-fit the brush guard, which with a small amount of trimming slotted right back on.

Small trim out of the back for the free spool leaver and a little out of the front to make room for the drum


The finished result





Still needs wiring up, so I'm on the scrounge for some decent cableing to get back to the battery winch lives under the passengers seat in a Defender

Actually did this on Saturday morning

Winch wired up and 40m of over braided Dynex Dux fitted

Got home tonight and made a new door skin trim for the back door, fitted a blingy door handle and made a little fold out table




Then I remembered that a package had shown up from www.landroverspares.co.nz for me during the day

Inside that package was a new oil pressure relief valve kit

So off came the sump again:


Out came the old pressure relief valve, and a quick side by side comparison:


Interesting that new spring is a fair bit longer. Thats got to be a good thing!!!!

Chucked it back together and took it for a strop. Much better cold pressure, hot pressure has about another 10psi. Its an improvement which was all I was after

Also in the package from www.landroverspares.co.nz was a cool little scoop for the cold air intake to the cab

Another Friday night, another Friday night mission

Snorkel time



Its a copy of the Genuine snorkel fitted to Defenders, courtesy of our main man at http://www.landroverspares.co.nz

First up was to have a look and see what was in the kit, incase I needed to get some extras:


Everything was there, and the quality of the parts was GOOD!!! If you want to be really picky, the supplied cap screws to hold the snorkel to the gaurd could have been stainless

The main tube and the flange onto the guard appear to be made from aluminium. The pre-cleaner is pretty impressive, nicely constructed from pressed steel, and light weight.



Anyways, I always hate fitting snorkels as it involves hole sawing a great big bloody hole in a perfectly good guard. Not this time though.

The Defenders cold air intake is located on the drivers side guard, behind the front wheel. Pop of the plastic grille and the hole is there ready to go


From there it was a matter of stripping out the air intake plumbing, sealing all the joints with a flexible silicone sealant including all of of the factory water drains and traps, then the fun job of mating the snorkel to the air intake ducting:

Inner guard duct ready to be attached to the guard and the snorkel flange with plenty (shit loads ) of silicone sealant:


So drilled some holes in the windscreen frame, did up some bolts, tightened up some hose clamps then it was time to stand back and see what it looked like and where it sat.

For NZ 4wheeling conditions, it was apparent the snorkel sat WAY WAY to high in its intended position. I adjusted it to its lowest possible position which was better, but it was still way up in the clouds above the roof line, begging to get smashed by a low hanging branch on ya typical over grown bush track:



A quick bit of measuring and a bit of hack saw and file action later I removed this from the main tube, a bit off the top and some more off the bottom:


The end result is good, the top of the pre-cleaner is only fractionally above the roof line:




Hopefully its sealed up properly, because it will get tested

You could test it, I guess by starting the motor and blocking the end of the pipe to see how quickly it dies. You should also hear sucking if there are air leaks.

I tried that once, with very bad results

The suction caused the plastic intake ducting to collapse on itself and the deformation damaged the seals at the joins and put holes in the ducting at the pinch points where it collapsed

Was in a tinkering mood last night, so decided to see if I could boost the low end performance of the the 300tdi.

They are always a little sluggish off the mark, but are so clean running (no smoke) that you can't tell they are a diesel.

So basically they have reduced the fueling at low manifold pressures to a minimum to eliminate smoke, at the cost of supplying fuel to get the Turbo going.

The 300tdi has traditional VE injector pump, which is awesome because you can do all sorts to dial up the engine output!!

First up I prised out the tamper proof cap and turned up the off boost fuel by adjusting the diaphram a couple of turns and then back a bit untill the smoke turned into a haze accelerating off idle.



Then I went deeper and popped out the fuel delivery rate needle
and adjusted it 90degrees closer to its richest setting.



Then I adjusted (reduced) the preload in the spring which operates the needle by rotating the star wheel around half a turn. This should give it fuel more quickly at low manifold pressures and help heaps with the low and mid range pick up.



I stayed away from the max fuel delivery screw at this point, as it has enough top end to keep me happy. I was just interested in better off idle and mid range performance with out affecting the EGTS much.
