soa and wheel spacers on a 2a

Post by andy3542 »

Thinking about doing it.... would solve my tyre rub, getting my tyres hung up on the inside of the guards and getting hung up on the spring plates plus itll mean i can possible go with bigger tyres later on and not have to worry about body lifts. i know itll make it more unstable but the wheel spacers should counter act that? iv already got a rear axel which is set up for soa already, so it would in theory be a case of; getting new spring plates welded on the front, wheel spacers, extended hoses and...?
can i get it certed as i need the truck on the road?

cheers

id rather not get abuse about it being a stupid idea and not to do it to a landrover because others have in the past... but from what iv read guys havnt ever used spacers and nothing from NZ about them.

Different offset wheels might be another way instead of wheel spacers?? SOA should be good for clearance under the axles, less chance of spring hangups.

personally I'd look at spacers rather than spring over.

you wouldnt believe the crack this guy was on when he drove this  I even had the displeasure of sitting in it while it moved :? (the landy that is)

Wheel spacers are a cheap fix (check the threads but I think 27mm is the max you can run))

Hahaha I bought the rear axel out of that.
Was going to use the spacers to offset the fact that it was going to be lifted the theory being the wider wheel base would increase the stabiity slighty...

I use 27mm spacers and 15x8 steels, using 33" Jungle trekkers, 11.5" wide, and yes, still rub on springs on lock. Spring over is a bit radical and might find issues with the steering track rods on the right side. Was thinking of offsetting my rims to -20 or so as they;re 0 offset, will need re-certifying :(
S3 Rover truck cab, injected 186, Sals rear,Toyota P/steer, Safari disc brakes front, R/Rover D/brakes rear, 9500 winch, twin optima batts, roll bar, Disco seats, 33" JTs, scene lamps, onboard air, Front ARB locker.

im not getting rub on the springs its getting hooked up on the underside of the rear guards and extending the bump stops will give me no articulation... i know its abit extreme but i just think it cuts out a bunch of other issues now and others i could come across down the line + itll save my tyres now..

is there anything against getting it certed? iv noticed a few 40series cruisers on trademe that are certed for the mod.

im going to call the cert guy tomorrow or monday and see what he says.

good score mate, unlike that poor dudes missus, (she must be kicking herself - or him)
SOA with flat springs does work, check out wopass's crusier thread before he got all mashed up on be the flex master (as opposed to zukfiesty who just got agro cos the small zuk didnt give him the extention he wanted)

hahaha most possibly. mine needs to be road legal though so hopefully itll be ok.

my springs arent too flat but i could always pick up new ones if its going to be an issue.

i just emailed off to john brett technology asking if there were any major issues with what i want to do. is he the best guy to be talking to in regards to 4wds?

cheers

yup all road legal

and the old saggy flat springs is what you want to use if you go SOA as they will work better.

John Brett did the cert on mine and a few others i know of, good dude.

found an old as thread

just talked to john brett. he was worried about drive shaft angles (which could be fixed by cutting and turning the axel right?) also about the steering because they steer like shite already (dont really want to have to start putting in power steering ect ect) and about whether the 27mm spacers would make the wheel base wide enough to cope with the extra hight. maybe i should go with parabolics and a small body lift so no certing is required... and then soa when/if i take it off the road.

cheers guys, it seemed like a plausible idea but i dont want to risk starting the mod and then having to undo it all and pay to have stuff unmodified if theres a decent chance it wont be certifiable or having a never ending list of things that need to be changing in order to legally get in back on the road.

a) have you looked at the underside of your truck. You cannot just bodylift it without major chassis modifications (i.e cutting off outriggers and welding them on higher

b) every inch you go up you have to go out 2" to keep the same stability. So unless you are planning on bolting 5" spacers on each side...?

c) springovers are redneck. Exibit a: http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/Forums/ ... 48&start=0

Just get some decent springs, pack the bumpstops and cut your guards. Landrovers dont have springs that 'arent too flat'. They have a rediculous arch from factory. I run 35" creepies on mine (with factory rear springs) and cut guards. They only just scrub the on max flex and with non fucked springs in it I still have decent uptravel.

Just because something is different, doesnt mean its a good idea. If lots of people arent doing something, its usually because its a fking retarded idea. Much like ladas really

The idea of a Lada may be retarded, but in reality it's good.

But now I see that SOA may not be so good

Oh, and keep putting Lada's down, 'cos it really helps keep the price at a minimum, making them affordable for us who realise their potential.

Sorry for hijacking your thread, Andrew  :)

Yes i have been under it and iv got a mate whose is currently stripped to the chassis, iv only have a quick look at it and thought it may have been possible but maybe it isnt, im going round there tonight so ill have a further look, even if i were to lift the tray.

i was thinking of going 2" on each wheel but the cert guy has said you can only cert up at 27mm (about an inch) and therefore it wont be nearly wide enough. and im not about to start changing the axels to landcruiser ones.

that guy is just farked! i dont think iv read anything so stupid in my life. seriously thinking about welding springs to the diff and then using string! he should be allowed near motor vechiles... and that in itself is enough to convince me not to do it.

my springs are awfully flat compared to factory so ill be investing in some new ones, possibly parabolics and that should solve the rubbing issues on the inside of the guards.

i was only looking into it as a possible solution to solve a few issues in one go, but it isnt feasible if i want it to stay on the road.

cheers for the input guys, those with quite abit more knowledge then me have spoken the reality of the situation and that it really shouldnt be attempted.

trademe bro or get them made up, alot of the boy racers use them to widen the stance of the car.
