Your opinion on Goodyear MTR's?

Just looking for peoples opinions on the MTR's. I am thinking of buying a set.

Things I'd like to know are performance in mud, rock etc. Sidewall strength, Tread life, and how you find them compared to other tyres you've seen or owned.

Any mud tir is good but look at the amount of road use you have they all wear faster than AT and road tires and afford less grip on the road and in the wet on a roas surface.

Roger ran them on his safari for a wile, he liked them but they dont clear very well in the thick mud we go in.

If you are needing a set that is road friendly too they are probly the ones to go for, other wise, Get some creepys like your dads!

i have a ozzie 4x4 mag with a mud tyre test in it .....had MTR's in there,it was quite a good read.

scored top points on-road,roadholding,noise, vibration etc(5/5)

off road they took top points on rocks,but lacked the aggressive tread for mud.(5/5 rocks) , (2/5 mud)

Creepys and MTRs in the mud are similar in my opinion - A mate has brand new creepys on his Lux, I have 2nd hand (but good) MTRs on my Lux (both 35's)and in any situation He's not far behind - not very often in front (I have a bit more HP tho). MTRs do "bag" alot better than Creepys - that is without BL rims off course.

Yeah you do have to spin them fairy fast to get them to work well. If you don't want to be revving around in the mud too much look at a Simex type of tread

GOT 265 /75 16 S MTR/S FOR MY MAZDA UTE ,SPIN them well you move it didn't have a good 4wd system, so had to make do . got a 89 swb saf the mtr/s were all i had stuck them on the saf they are abit narrow for the truck but long as they spin it does alright, got through where other club guys thought I would be winching, or towed long as you get tall and wide ones they will work well for you

yeah right......don't listen to him, I have had Creepy's for over 2 years, but will be replaced with MTR's, they wear better and seem to grip/bag better

I have used BFG's. They really improved the series performance off road. But alas, they are not cheap.

I *think* I will buy a set of 35" MTR's. Either second hand or brand new. Im just waiting for a bargain to come up.

Hosehustler, You didnt like the creepies?

Another option I have been considering are mudzillas :twisted:

They're bloody good, run them for over 2 years, but seen mtr's in action all that time, "I feel" the mtr's appear to suit most terrain more often than the solid walled creepys,, I let mine down to 4psi with no bead locks, just to get them to work real good

will replace them with 35' mtr's

I have only been out on my 35" Creepies once, the track consised of steep greasy climbs with rounded rocks in a clay bedding, rutted greasy clay climbs, rock hill climbs etc etc

You get the idea, a track that consists of a variety of terrain. They were excellent, expecially in the slippery clay.

The Safari crawled straight up one hill with no wheel spin and Bens cruiser on the 36" pede's needed 3 goes and alot of pedal.

I'm pleased with them and they are ok on the road, which is good as i like to put them on before i leave home for a trip.

I have measured the void on both the MTRs and the Creepy's as i was tossing up between the two and based on the measurment went for the more open Creepy's.

I guess on the heavier truck they bag ok, and with the small tweaks :wink:

to the donk they clear well

I been runnin MT/R's and found them awesome in all terrain.. I've had them on for 5mths and have only worn 3mm of tread.. done around 15000 km on rd & a heap of the rough stuff too. As far as the mud thing goes, as said before you just give it a bit more in the gutts and they clear fine. The only thing that buggas them up.. ( like most mud tyres) is sand... The side walls on them are strong as hell as is the rest of the tyre.. Ive heard that the new cooper STT mud tyre has got the same DURA WALL technology now and will be on the shelf this month. But there a softer rubber so ya wont get the same sort of milage out of them. I would recommend MT/R's to anyone wanting a good all round tyre. :wink:

At the last aotea play there was a guy there with a 70 series running the new cooper stt's. They were awesome in the mud, but ive heard that they can be a bit pricy :roll:

I took my almost new Simex ETs up some gluggy sticky clay, had to give it heaps in third to clear the tread. Point being depends where you drive.

I've saw some new STTs in west Auckland mud, they got sold the next day.
The 4WD Monthly rated the STTs quite well, although some aussies might not agree, saw one guy asking about glue to put tread blocks back on :roll:

When I had a set of STT's put on my truck last year the guys were telling me they were a nice tyre and they've been using them as road tyres to save the wear on their off road tyres

35 inch mtr's are your best bet by far they are great on road and as people have said are just as gud or better as creepys and bfg's in the mud

had MTR's on 80 series and got swampers on lux now and will replace them with MTR's when nackered .

Another vote for the MTR's. I'm running 33's on the Safari, and will be getting 35's as my second offroad set.

Yeah, I've been toying with the idea for a while, but after your commen5s, I've decided to go for it.
Have yet to decide between a slightly higher lift (I can go 4" with my current shocks) or body lift. Have you got a LVC for the BL yet?

Also looking for a front difflock now, should've just got a prolocker in oz :roll:

we had a run up muriwai beach today. start in the line of trucks third ended up last with tail end charlie, as the tyres just didn't work in the sand. to much like hard work , called it a day took the next exit off the beach,

the possablity of running 265 wide tryes on a 2300 kg truck does not help support the weight ,but still love those tyres
