Swap Transfer Case

Post by mytronic »

Hi All
Did a quick search and found nothing specific, may have missed one though. Don't shoot me  Also posted something similar but was looking at a different senario

Will a Gen 1 Manual Transfer case from 1993 SWB 3.0l Manual fit a Gen 2 1994 SWB 3.5l Auto ?

Need to get First Low to actually be low

Thanks
Mike

Yeah man I know. Cooked my brakes yesterday on a 4x4 run. Down hill with my Gen 2, 3.5 auto. Sucks big time. http://www.marks4wd.com/products/gearma ... -gears.htm do a low range transfer case gear set. Give them a ring, see if they still do them.
Could look into diff ratios as well. Think the 2.5D had a good low ratio. Will do some investigating and report later.
Cheers MIKE.

P.S. The guy I was following had a 2.8D paj auto. and recond he had heaps of engine braking. Even to the extent of needing to change from low to 2nd . was very disheartening to see his brake light off when mine were ON.

No it won't fit. The 1993 is a gen 2 though, not a gen one. All the transfer case ratios are about identical anyway so it wouldn't gain you anything.

Best you can do is either put aftermarket low range gears in from oz or put LWB 2.8 diffs into it which are a little lower. 2.5 diesel ones can be lower again but don't fit, they are smaller.

Thank you, this has saved me some time. Am on the hunt for the LWB Diffs as recommended .

Don't pay too much for the diffs as they only give you about 6% improvement, the low ratio transfer gears would be the way to go especially if you going to keep the vehicle for a while.

I did the swap to my 3.5 manual but not sure if i'd bother again, I did notice it, mostly on the road it helped when I went to 33's.

Well, depends if its for on road or off road, you won't find a quicker 4x4 from point to point on secondary roads than the evo (within reason) but they are not as capable off road as the normal one and not as modify - able.

Yeah, I LOVE my 1995 Gen 2 3.5 Auto with Power Button
Its just the low range, can reach 40km/h down hill !!
Unfortunately the VW GTI is first in line for chipping, then gears it is. I wonder if anyone has done this or got a set for sale

Yea I know a couple that have done it, both reckon it is great. I'll be doing mine when the gearbox comes out which won't be far away as the thrust bearing is making a good rumble.

Don't be afraid to use the brakes off road though, they are a useful tool....

You know it, going to fit a switch to turn the brake lights off
You should have seen my passenger as I hit the gas while doing 30 in a full mud slide, couldn't stop shaking .
