OK, total newbie here
i bought a 91 Hilux Surf (aka 4Runner) this weekend, and it "blew" driving it home (DOH!)
(Petrol 3ltr V6 - I understand its a 3VZ-e or something like that)
So, it's a new engine for me - my question for you is:
seeing as I have to face the wrath of the financial controller for a new engine anyways...
1 - What tricks or traps for young players should I be aware of?
I saw somewhere that some engines chew lots of gas and others don't - what options are there as far as the V6 goes?
2 - Recommendations on *who* would be best to do the job - tow in, drive out. Preferably Waikato, Auckland as a second option - I can get it on a trailer
I'm no mechanic - I've played with a few deisels, but under adult supervision only really.
3 - Are there any specific other *upgrades* or *gadgets/things* that could, would or should be considered when replacing the engine (ie some new improved ignition, blah blah blah)
4 - What would a *reasonable* re-engine job cost?
I've got quotes of $1850 + GST and $1950 incl GST from a couple of Engine places - not fitted
And one quotes $3680 drive in/drive out
Is this about as expected?

well for 3650 you could probably buy a new v6 surf, keep any good bits from yours and sell it for parts for good money.

for 3650 you could get a Holden 3.8 V6 in there and certed.
800 for the motor and loom, 500 for the cert 1000 for adaption 1650 for labour.
even if the motor has done a few KM's, the're still more bullet proof and fuel efficient then the 3VZ.
I had a 3vz in mine, threw it out and shoved a Rb30 skyline block and later twin cam head on it,
but as you say, that sort of Frankenstein motor swap is a weekend job for some and completely out of the question for others.
