lsd into open housing

hi just a quick question i have a surf diff head which i have taken the lsd part out of and am going to be putting it into an open diff carrier with 4.88 gears out of an early model hilux (85-89ish) will this fit without any dramas? from what ive heard i need to chop a little off the end of my front axles to get them to fit correctly. if someone could help that would be great.
