Rear Winch help....
Rear Winch help....
Hi there, just looking into the possibility of mounting my Tigerz11 winch under my rear tray somehow and running the line through to the front. I have seen a few set ups like this and I think it would suit the hilux as I need weight in the back and not the front.
My Hilux has IFS and i cant really see any clear way through for a rope. Has anyone done this with IFS ?? Would love to see some pics etc........or any suggestions would be cool.
Ive also noticed with alot of rear ounted winches, they seem to be mounted on an angle, not straight forward. Is there a reason for this ??
Thanks in advance....
Cheers Dan

Hey Dan,
It is as easy as running the rope through a tube affixed to a chassis rail.
Sounds like we need to have a design sesson

I keep looking for the loose nut behind the wheel, but I can't find it!!
Re: Rear Winch help....
You should see how much is in the way IFS stuff, it is not easy but Iam sure there will be a way.

No different to a IFS Terrano....sarus

Just have to be a little creative.

Yeah, Im sure there is a way, design session on !! Saw your truck outside Barts yesterday, will be in touch....

Re: Rear Winch help....
Mounting the winch on an angle is just about getting it square to the rope and centered. You need about 800-1000mm between the drum and the closest fairlead/tube then yeap find a path and away you go. Mine runs trough a tube most of the way and it has a few bends in it. (goes inside the cab too). Depending on how smooth you think the inside of the chassis rail is I've seen the rope run up there too.
Toy - Zuk chassis tub, hilux 4.88 axles and transfer, Nissan CA18DE motor and auto trans, sc12 supercharger, 32 10'5 simex, twin motor 8274 custom freespool. Well the parts are all there in various corners of the shed
Re: Rear Winch help....
Mine runs through the chassis rail, love to tell you how well it works, but it hasn't been tested yet
Ugly is a state of mind..... and the state of my truck!

Yeah, my mate works there now.
He got some cool equipment there too

He's looking at breaking into the 4wd market rather than the "pocket rocket" modifications.

Hey Dan,
Maybe you can post a a photo from the back to the front taken from underneath the truck.
Cheers.

Re: Rear Winch help....
do a body lift, even just 25mm and that will create a clear straight line for ya

Yeah, ive done a 50mm body lift, and a 50mm suspension lift, but there is no clear way through. Its all good till you get to the IFS stuff......cheers for the suggestion though..

Re: Rear Winch help....
Doesn't have to be straight, just use a tube or multiple fearleads. If you have a 50mm body lift you should be able to run a tube under the floor and if need be attached to the floor pan.

Yeah, under the floor pan area is all clear and plenty of room, its just once you get to the front. With all the IFS, Radiator, Steering Dampner etc there really isnt a line through.... I will try and take a pic that shows this.....

Re: Rear Winch help....
The cable doesn't need to come out the front in the center, follow the chassis rail all the way to the front and have the cable come out on one side of the radiator?

Yes I am aware of it not needing to be centre, but good on ya for checking. I will try and get a pic or 2 up tomorrow to show the front. Im no mechannic unfortunately so I cant really explain what parts are in the way. cheers.....

I can explain what is in the way no clear line past floor pan as Engine/transfer are quite low down also as mentioned IFS. I have seen this and there is little room on the sides but there maybe a possiblity to sneak a tube through somewhere. There diffienatly needs to be some investigateing on this.

Re: Rear Winch help....
what about bending the tube to follow the chassis rail on the the engine side over the front axles ??
There is no mechanical problem so difficult that it cannot be solved by brute strength and ignorance.
Re: Rear Winch help....
That's on the plan.
A bit of the right tube and a wee session with the pipe benders is all that is needed.
We missed having lunch today, but will have the design sesson before the weekend is out.
Input is all good

Re: Rear Winch help....
Would have thought that you do not want too many bends due to the friction that will be generated particulaly with all the grit going through, more tension = more friction meaning a loss in pulling power.
Also need to be carefull that tube / pipe does not wear through, will cut the rope, presume you are looking at using stainless steel, will not wear as much.
Haven't had any actual experience, just trying to think of possible issues with using bent pipe.
If experience has found otherwise thats all good.
Cheers

Re: Rear Winch help....
Hi Dan,
I see the plans are a changing on the winch position slowly
I'm going to be mounting Mudhogs winch in the rear too and have been looking into what the Winch Comp trucks have been doing. After talking to Warren at 4wdbits and looking at his truck and taking pic's I'm going to use 31mm Aluminium Extruded Round tube with a 5mm wall from Ullrich. The reason in using Alui tube this size is that it will disperse any heat from the rope, the wall thickness will keep it ridged enough once the bends are in and it's easy to work with.
Just the way I'm going.

That's exactly what I was thinking too. Thick walled alloy

Just a few subtle bends is all that will be needed.

So Dan, where have you decided to mount the winch

Well after thinking about it and going through scenarios im giong to stick with whacking it on the front like everyone else. Maybe in the future I can make the change.......

Did you see how rokhound did it? winch just behind/in the cab. Line ran to back through a removable block pulley. Welded a big chain link in to a hole cut in chassis rail to act as fairlead. pops out the front of the truck ready to use
You probably dont need the removable block at the back (unless you want the option of winching backwards). But yea seems like a simple enough thing to do. Check out the mutt's build thread and you will see what i mean.

Re: Rear Winch help....
Just change to plasma and use a plastic pipe..(Conduit- about 20-25mm) from any electrical store/ outlet.. run it any way you like as long as it's to the front.. clip to what ever you can and it won't wear through .. tried and proven on another winch truck that I know had a hammering.. I'll be doing the same when I get a cheapish electric winch for my setup.. real easy no hassle..
Only hassle is getting the plasma.. $$$ but in the long run is for the better and safer on you and the surrounding people..cheers
